Romero has been actively involved with each deployed member and their families on a weekly basis. Romero has made phone calls to their spouses and families. He has also made sure everyday things like vehicle maintenance have been taken care of. Each unit on Hill Air Force Base has contributed to the 230 deployed troops, and there has been an outpouring of charitable contributions from various sponsors. Most recently. Christmas trees have been donated to deployed members' families. Security Forces are not the only ones from the 419th Fighter Wing being deployed. The 67th Aerial Port Squadron has had about 60 troops who have been gone for a year or more. Sr. Master Sgt. Atisme, the first sergeant for the 67th, is proud of her troops. She knows the year they spent deployed wasn't easy. "It is tougher on the families than it is in on the member," Atisme said. Atisme said it's often harder for family members at home because they may not have as strong of a support system as Airmen. "We are a team," Atisme continued. "As military members, we stick together and watch out for each other. Their families don't have all that support. All they see is an empty chair at dinner on Thanksgiving and on Christmas morning. The member doesn't get to see his children open gifts." Back at home, however, most troops understand that they must fulfill their duty when called upon. "1 feel for the troops that are gone," said Master Sgt. Smerkol from the 419th Mission Support Flight. "I really do." Master Sgt. Burke's husband was deployed last year during the holidays. Her children missed their dad on Christmas morning. "We all signed up to do a job," Burke said. "I want my kids to be able to grow up and know that later on in their life they will be safe. It's our job. That is what we are here for." The 419th Fighter Wing has been supportive to all deployed members and their families in a time that is tough for everybody. The members have kept in touch with deployed members" spouses, sent care packages and invited family members to squadron functions. Knowing the holidays can be the toughest time of year on families. Hill Air Force Base commanders are in full support of the deployed troops.
