Show WSU golf hangs tough in Provo, strengthens bid for postseason Sweep From page 10 Carlie K. Andrews Signpost staff writer After struggling in the second round, the Weber State University men's golf team held on to finish tied for fourth at the Brigham Young University Cougar Classic. The Cougar Classic, played at the Riverside Country Club was the last regular season tournament for the men's team. The University of New Mexico won the tournament with a team total 2-under-par 862. University of Texas El Paso's Ryan Hietals won medalist honors finishing the 54-hole event with a 12-under-par total of 204. Following the first round the men were in third place behind the University of New Mexico and three shots behind BYU. Leading the team with a 1-under-par 71 was Andrew Smeeth. The second 18, played Friday afternoon in the wind and rain was not as kind to the men's team. With all players shooting over par rounds, the team dropped to fifth place. Diistrict Seven rival Colorado State University led the Wildcats by four shots going into Saturday 's third round. "We simply said, 'Hey, this is your program. What do you want to do with it?,'" he said. "I think everyone is pointed in the same direction. They're very cohesive. Our goal was to win every game today and we did just that." "I'm not ready for my college golf career to end," said senior Chris Dyson after Friday's round. With seniors Smeeth and Dyson leading the pack, the Weber State men's team set out Saturday to catch Colorado State. Smeeth fired a 4-under-par 68 to help move the Wildcats into fourth place with Colorado still to finish. The first five Colorado players turned in over par rounds, making Weber's regional outlook more promising. CSU's number one player J. D. Manning 3-putted the 18th green to finish with a5-over-par 77, tyng the team totals at 884. During the Spring season, Weber has had more top finishes than CSU, putting them in a better position for the final regional spot. The final decision will be made by the tournament chairman.
