Show May 12, 1993 The Signpost 11 WSU chamber choir takes fresh approach for spring show - . A 1?- I i ,jBy TYSON HIATT Signpost wire editor "The Weber State University Chamber Choir is taking a new approach to their spring concert bysinginga widevariety of pieces instead of just focusing on one iod or type of music," said Ron Henderson, Director of Weber State Chamber Choir. The concert will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church. "This time we're pulling out all the stops," said Henderson. He said the 24-member chamber choir will perform everything from the the renaissance madrigals to current vocal jazz. The music the choir will perform is a collection of pieces over the last 400 years. Three of these pieces were composed by Henderson. The three pieces are "Go Lovely Rose" which is taken from a poem of the Barochian period from a poet, Edmon Waller. Also, a piece called "The DoveDescending" issettoapoem by T.S.Elliot. "The Dove Descending is a poem about the day of Pentecost," HtRjerson said. "Go Lovely Rose" has a folk-like melody. The third piece is taken from two poems, one called "Julia's Clothes" and the other called "When Love Flies In." Other pieces rounding out the program include a ba rbershop quartet and a new wave rockapella number "Corndogs." This piece tells of a couples fight over eating habits. Something else that will be different for this year's spring concert is WSU student Jenifer Elkington will be reading poetry. The poems to be read will be those written by Elkington. Henderson said Elkington is a accomplished poet as well as a singer. She isa former editorof Metaphor, WSU's literary magazine. The choir will also continue its reputation of performing German pieces by performing some pieces with German parts. Directing pieces with German parts are especially significant for Henderson because his dissertation dealt with German Music. Henderson said he chose the United Methodist Church to hold Friday night's concert because of the acoustics and the size. "We don't like to perform in the really large halls( wi th this size of choir). The size is perfect for this type of a choir and it lends itself to all types of music," he said. He said the church is smaller than the St. Joseph's Cathedral where the concert choir and, WeberStatesingersand the chamber choir do their Christmas concerts. The smaller area will make it perfect for the 24 member choir. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at Dee Events Tiket Office.
