But the men's golf team accomplished their goal at the Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. That goal was to finish above the University of Nevada-Reno and the University of Utah. On Monday, a second-round score of 71 by Rich DeRond gave the Wildcats a slight advantage. In the final round on Tuesday, senior Roger Cox and junior Andrew Smeeth helped secure the advantage with scores of 74 each. The tournament was held at the par-71 Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif. Coach Mac Madsen said the course was a challenge for the team. He was taken in the first round and was the sixth pick overall, taken by the British Columbia Lions. During his three starting seasons with WSU, Shaw re-wrote the record book for receivers. Shaw is now the all-time leading receiver with 206 receptions for 2,383 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also became the first WSU receiver to catch 150 passes in his first three seasons with the Wildcats. Also taken in the draft was offensive lineman Ken Rayner, another native Canadian. The Weber High stand-out has also placed second in the boy's state cross country meet as well. "Nate has an aggressive nature on the track, and I am impressed with his mental toughness and competitiveness," Hislop said. "He consistently ran his best races of the year at the region and state meets." Pettingill, who hails from Boise, Idaho, captured the 1993 Idaho 1 A titles in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs last year. He attended West Jordan High as a sophomore, but his family moved to the Boise area just before his junior year. The team will travel to Provo next week for the Cougar Classic. In Provo, the Wildcats will be looking to beat Boise State and the University of Hawaii. "His aunt is Paula Pettingill, who competed for Coach Blaisdell here at Weber State and won the NCAA women's indoor high jump title her senior year." Wilson, from Yoder, Wyo., won the state 1A 1,600 and 3,200 meter titles as a junior, and last fall as a senior, he won the individual cross country title as well. A sour spot in all of this excitement is the story of WSU offensive lineman Todd Casey. Nearly a month ago Casey was contacted by another CFL expansion team, the Shreveport (La.) As he prepared to attend their camp, he received a call from the Pirates and was told they had a copy of his medical records. Because he had re-constructive surgery on one of his knees in 1992, they told him they were reneging their invitation to camp and canceling his contract. This was particularly disturbing to Casey since he started the entire 1993 season, and he and WSU trainer Joel Bass feel his knee is 100 percent. Casey and the WSU coaches are now mounting a letter writing campaign to CFL on the matter. n k : ' : .: wi J) Robbie Johnson v.verv lu BEGINS $500 Grand Prize :k . n i i am u r iXS Amateur n BIKINI & EXOTIC CLASS $1.99 Daily Lunch Specials Mon - Fri 0; Mat Tnn CirlnU Ctoik Trtarv Tiv rr riirtfi iwlMmaAminLraTirr esday APRIL 19th 11 Y mW FOURSWjES of continuous entertmnent si! u |
