Show Utahns awarded honorary degrees By David Hill Signpost staff writer Four prominent Utahns will be awarded honorary doctorate degrees at Weber State University's commencement exercises June 10. Honorees E. LaMar Buckner, Dee W. Hock, Raymond S. Uno and Barbara B. Smith will receive degrees from the school of humanities as a result of their accomplishments and service to the community and WSU. "It was a positive experience for me to talk to these outstanding people and invite them to the commencement exercises," said WSU President Paul H. Thompson. "These great individuals are characterized by their service to the community and the nation." President Thompson also said the recipients expressed great appreciation and said they felt honored to receive the awards. Smith became known worldwide for her service as Relief Society general president of the Church of Jesus' Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1974 to 1984. Smith, who was born in Salt Lake City, is currently the president of American Mothers Inc. She also serves as co-chairwoman of the group's 1994 annual convention in Salt Lake City. Buckner, who was born in Provo, graduated from Weber State in 1942. He also earned a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. Buckner served as alumni president at B YU and Weber State and won distinguished alumni awards from both institutions. He is a former Utah state senator and retired president of Buckner-Radmall Insurance Counselors. His public service includes two years in the Utah House of Representatives, eight years in the state senate and four years on the state board of regents.Buckner also served as a regional representative, mission president and Ogden Temple from 120 in 1000 to 26 in 1000, and nearly 100 percent of all children are now immunized, he said. Uno, who was also born in Ogden, graduated from WSU in 1954. He also earned bachelor's, master's and juris doctorate degrees from the University of Utah. Uno is senior judge of the Utah 3rd District Court. He served on the Salt Lake City court and the Utah 5th Judicial Circuit Court. Uno's public service includes deputy attorney for Salt Lake county and assistant state attorney general. Saudi Arabians, he said. Saudi Arabians make up only 10 percent of physicians and 21 percent of health assistants in their country, the rest are recruited from all over the world. This creates a challenge in the lack of proper orientation of the country's needs, when recruiters do not have experience and can't prepare physicians who come to Saudi Arabia, he said. Although Saudi Arabia encourages its own people to take advantage of the educational system and become medical experts. If students plan on receiving financial aid for 1993-94 and have not yet turned in all'of the required paperwork, the last day you can be reimbursed for any previous quarter is June 23. The financial aid office will not be held responsible for problems that prohibit students from receiving checks.
