Show Qxoirtts College All-Stars to play in memory of Tara Stark By Jared Page Signpost sports editor When Tara's 1994 All-Star Spring Classic tips-off this weekend at Roy High School, past and present college basketball greats like Robbie Johnson, Devin Santiago, Willie Sojourner, Byron Wilson and Devin Durrant will spark fond memories for fans of Utah basketball. But these memories will rank second in the hearts and minds of players and fans as they join together to remember the event's true All-Star, Tara Jean Stark. For the second straight year, the Classic will bear Tara's name. For years, Stark was the unofficial mascot of the annual event, organized by her grandfather, Dar Belnap. She would scurry after players' autographs, dance with the cheerleaders and hurry back to help her grandfather draw names out of a hat for door prizes. On Oct. 13, 1992, Stark was strangled to death on a dirt road behind her home in Roy. She was only 10-years-old at the time. The All-Star Classic in 1993 was dedicated to Stark and was given her name. This year, the event will again be played in remembrance of the young girl. "Tara had been going to the games since she was about five," Belnap said. "She really enjoyed the games more and more every year." Belnap, who raised Tara and her younger sister Kali from birth for five years, said that holding the event reminds him of Tara. "Even though she's gone, it just brings back the good memories of what she did and what she had accomplished in her young life," he said. "She had to be in volved in everything, even when she was in the way." Belnap has organized the annual Classic every year since 1983, except for in 1989 when he was too ill to put the event together. For the second straight year, proceeds of the Classic will be donated to the Child Abuse Prevention Council to help stop child crime. Donations will also be given to the Roy Boosters Club and to the purchasing of a new sound system in the Roy High School football stadium. This year, the All-Star Classic will have a new twist. In previous years, the game was played between present college all-stars and former college all-stars. This year, the tournament takes on an in-state rival atmosphere, featuring past and present all stars from Weber State, Utah State, Utah and BYU playing for their respected teams. "I felt that it would make it more competitive," Belnap said. "I needed to add some creativity to the tournament." Play gets under way on Friday night in the Roy High gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. with WSU taking on the Aggies of USU. Some familiar names on the Wildcat roster include the three seniors from this year's team, Robbie Johnson, Elroy Miller and Johnnie Moore. Willie Sojourner, Mike Sivulich and Riley Wimberly are also for the WSU team. Utah will meet BYU at 8:30 p.m., featuring players such as Tony Block, Paul A Feaki, Byron Wilson, Devin Durrant and Kevin Santiago. The losers of Friday night's games will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and the championship game will follow at 8:30 p.m. fe ,.MJr.. - . - .. . - . ...... -M .. .:. , .
