Show Arts events on campus diverse, fun eclectic By Jennifer A. King Signpost features editor Dinosaur mania dragged summer vacationers into movie theaters and department stores with the opening of "Jurassic Park" in June marking the beginning of a season exploding with great entertainment. Steven Spielberg's movie stormed the nation, bringing wi th it over 1800 different products. Products are still being released with the unique red and black logo, including the new Sega game. The movie inspired a living "dinosaur" exhibit at Hogle Zoo and the opening of the Eccles Dinosaur Park near Ogden canyon. June 8 was a turning point for the arts due to the vote against the Salt Lake County art tax increase. The opposed tax was designed to benefit more that 130 organizations that are having financial difficulty throughout the state such as Hogle Zoo, the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, Ballet West and the Pioneer Theater. As a result of the opposed tax, organizations have found it necessary to resort to other methods of generating additional revenue. The Utah Symphony was forced to raise ticket prices. Over 18,000 music lovers poured into Weber County Fairgrounds June 25 to see one of the summer's largest musical events, Lollapalooza. Alternative radio sta tion X-96 termed the event "the largest collection of cool people ever assembled in Weber County." The festival, which began at 9 a.m., was host to bands such as Tool, Arrested Development, Fishbone, Front 242, Primus,Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr. and Babes in Toyland. Concert goers wandered through various vendor stands selling everything from ethnic foods to body piercing, Guatemalan clothes to exotic jewelry, as well as beverages and pizza. Utah Musical Theater produced a successful season with four musicals which included "Fiddler on the Roof," "Pump Boys and Dinettes," "Peter Pan" and "West Side Story." The 13th UMT season resulted in various new changes. As a result of last season's sellout, this year offered additional seating and an expanded schedule. Weber State University hosted the "Corps Encore" edition of the 1993 Summer Music Games June 28th. The Drum Corps International competitive season included an event where four top drum and bugle corps from across the United States competed in the 13th annual "Corps Encore." '"Corps Encore' has become a favorite traditional summer event for many people," said Thorn Root, director of the event and the band program at WSL'. From dino-mania to marching buglers, summer vacationers certainly had their fill of culture and entertainment this season.
