Friday, the International Olympic Committee picked Sydney, Australia over Beijing, home to nearly 1.2 billion people one-fifth of the world's population to host the 2000 Summer Games. With the IOC's choice of Sydney, a glamorous, cosmopolitan city with superior sports facilities and technology, Utah Olympic backers took heart that Salt Lake City's bid for the 2002 Winter Games is on the right track. "That might be an omen for us," said Robert Hunter, di- rectorof communications for the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee.Hunter said in an interview this summer that the building of the ice rink held a "two-fold purpose." He said one purpose is to satisfy the need for an ice rink in Northern Utah for growing interest in ice sports. The other purpose points directly to the Olympics. The committee wants to demonstrate that there are facilities available for the Winter Games before actively racing after the bid to bring the Winter Olympics to Utah in 2002, Hunter said. ' Tom Welch, bid committee chairman, said Sydney's bid laid the groundwork for Salt Lake. "Sydney's campaign has been mirrored by whatSaltLakehasrun and will continue to runas we look to June of 1995" when to the decision will be made. Work on the rink, which began last December and will cost $5,935,9000, should be finished by next December. Half of the cost of the building is funded through the Utah Sports Authority and half is funded by Weber County. The la nd northwest of the Dee Events Center was donated by WSU. The facility will house an olympic-size hockey rink, seating for 2,000 spectators, equipment rental and pro shop, public changing rooms, four team rooms, vending areas and a lounge. This summer, Jim Cox, architect with WSU architectural services said even if Utah doesn't get the Olympic games, Weber County will have won a recreational and sport ice rink. "It wouldn't surprise me if more high schools in the area organize hockey teams," he said. Hunter agreed. "The ice rink will be in such a demand that the public will demand another," he said. The ice rink will be named the OgdenWeber Ice Sheet. ... IMF OCTOBER 2nd 4:30 pm UPPER QUAD (grassy knoll) between Natural Science Bldg. and Health Professions Bldg.
