Show Wildcats fall to MSU for only second time in nine years ByStaci Perez Signpost staff writer ' ' ' Weber 'State University was defeated by Montana State for only the second time in nine years on Saturday at Reno H. Sales Stadium inBozeman, Mont. The Bobcats couldn't have asked for a better homecoming as they downed the Wildcats 14-10 and improved to 3-1 for the first time since 1978. Montana State, third in Big Sky in rushing offense, once again received stunning performances from running backs' Fred Moore and Clint Morton, both rushing for more than 100 yards. It was Moore's third 100 rushing game this season as the 185-pound junior totaled 178 yards on 31 carries. ' ' Morton, a junior running back from Spokane, Wash., had his second consecutive 100 rushing effort as he had 21 carries for a total of 141 yards. WSU quarterback Rob Westervelt, who went into the game averaging 189 yards in total offense, completed 13 of 34 passes and threw three interceptions for a total of 154 yards. The Wildcats had their game going early as 210-pound sophomore Von Robinson scored on a 1-yard run with 9:47 remaining in the first quarter to put the Wildcats up 6-0. With the extra point the Wildcats had a 7-0 lead before MSU freshman kicker Jeff Stevens kicked a pair of field goals late in the first quarter to close the gap 7-6. With 2:02 left in the first half, MSU scored its only touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run by Moore. The Bobcats extended their 'lead to 14-7 on a successful two point conversion by Morton. The only score in the second half was a' 31-yard 'field' goal by 'WSU's freshman kicker Steve Riggs. Montana State ran the ball on 63 of its 70 offensive plays. The Wildcats spread their offense evenly with31 rushingand 34 passing plays. The MSU quarterback threw for only 27 yards in his 10 passing attempts. Head Coach Dave Arslanian falls to 24-25-0 overall record and 4-2-0 against Montana State in his fifth season at WSU. The Wildcats will now prepare to meet Eastern Washington University in Wildcat Stadium on October 2. WSU leads the series 7-4 overall, losing the game last year 32-14 at Woodward Stadium. Earlier this season, the WSU football team went from Jekyll to Hyde in their first three outings. The Wildcats played their first game against Sonoma State at home, beating the Cossacks 40-28. WSU quarterback Rob Westervelt completed 29-48 passes for 373 yards and four touchdowns. He was helped by senior running back Eddie Lua who had 22 carries for 114 yards. The crowd of 5,705 was treated to excitement early in the game, with a Wildcat fumble recovery at kickoff. The WSU special teams played extremely well for the Wildcats. In addition to the fumble recovery, the special teams had several successful kickoff returns and blocked punts. The Wildcats' defense also played well, forcing a safety in the second quarter by tackling Sonoma State running back Ivan Wilson in the end zone. Women's volleyball digs in By Jared Page Signpost sports editor After a 2-1 start, the 1 993 WSU women's volleyball team has dropped 10 in a row, including the first conference match at BoiseSta te on Thursday. The Wildcats picked up both winsat the University of San Diego Tournament held Sept. 3-4. After losing the opener to the host University of San Diego Toreros, the Wildcatsdefeated both Eastern Illinois and Texas-San Antonio in three straight games. WSU lost the final match of the tournament to Northern Iowa 3-1. Senior middle blockerhitter Alison Borgman was named to the All-Tournament Team. Borgman averaged 3.4 kills per game and a .263 hitting percentage along with two aces, 31 digs and 14 blocks for the tournament. With a 2-2 record the Wildcats traveled to Provo on Sept. 8 to battle the ninth ranked BYU Cougars, a team thathasgone31-0against the Wildcats. At the Gonzaga Volleyball Invitational heldSept. 10-11 inSpokane, Wash., the Wildcats lost three close ones to fall to 2-6 on the year. The host Gonzaga Bulldogs beat the Wildcats 11-15, 15-7,15-13, and 15-11. "We're getting belter," Coach Givens said. "We just need to start winning the close ones." The Wildcats then faced the No. 20 ranked Texas Tech and dropped another close one 15-6, 10-15, 15-13, and 16-14. Oregon also stole one from the Wildcats in a four game match. Former Weber High star Marvett Dickamore hit .500 in the match and made the All-Tournament team. The Wildcats met Utah Stale in the Dee Events Center on Sept. 14 only to lose their sixth straight match. "They took us out of our offense," Coach Givens said. Poor hitting by the Wildcats (.075) led to their eighth straight loss as they fell to the University of Wyoming 3-0 on Sept. 18. In theirfinal pre-season match, the Wildcats dropped to 2-10 after losing to the University of Utah 15-4, 15-13, 14-16, 15-5 on Sept. 21 in Salt Lake City. "We've played against some good competition this pre-season," Givens said. "We're a good team. We just need to win one to know that we're good." Dickamore led the Wildcats with 15 kills against the Utes and Borgman added 1 3 kills of her own. Lisa I lolley had 13 digs followed by Katie Deisinger with 1 1.
