"Carmina Barana" May 12th 0 Midieval music marks Weber State Spring Symphony and Choir concert By BLAKE BAKER Staff writer of The Signpost Weber State's music department will be performing Tuesday night, May 12. For the first time in years, the Weber State Symphonic Band and the Weber State Concert Choir will be performing together. According to Dr. Root of the Music department, the band and choir used to perform together every Mother's Day, but in recent years they have not had that opportunity. This year they will be performing a work entitled "Carmina Barana;" a collection of sacred songs and poems from the 13th century.Root saidthis concert should be very enjoyable and there will be nothing that can be found offensive. It is a collection of songs and poems written by "galliards"; men that travelled from town to town entertaining the public during the 13th century. '"Carmina Barana' wasarranged by Karl Orf in 1936. Each part of the arrangement is suppose to express the mood of the poem it is based on," Root explained. Both the band and the choir will perform this number with soprano soloist Karen Brookens. The band and the choir will also perform separately. There will be instrumental chamber ensembles performing as well. The band will be performing two pieces. The first is entitled "Armenian Dance," which is a tribute to the beauty of the Russian countryside. Root explains that he wants people to realize that there is still beauty in that part of the world despite the violence that has occured there in recent months. The second piece, is entitled "Festive Variations." This is an original work written by Root and is being performed for the first time. Concert Choir will also be performing two pieces. One of which is entitled "Sea Fever." It will be directed by Dr. Henderson and includes over one hundred voices. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens.
