Show lilt SioNttjil Entertainment Sylvester Stallone shoots for comedy in Oscar 7 By Julie K. demons Staffwriter of The Signpost Friday, May 10, 1991 In the life of Angelo "Snaps" Provolone it is no easy job to become an honest man when your speciality is being the head-honcho of the-Boston mafia. "Oscar" is a comedy farce that sends the mind a-wheeling and doesn't bring you down to until the end. When the famous bootlegger "Snaps" Provolone (Sylvester Stallone) is sent to his father's deathbed, he must be ready for the worst. Little did "Snaps" realize that the worst is that his father's last wish is that he should become an "honest Joe" to restore his families honor, or what little of it they have left. "Snaps" dis-heartedly goes along with his father Papa Eduardo in order to keep the piece (machine gun) I mean peace in the family. But "Snaps" never realized how hard it would be to become an honest high-class society member, when all those that are near and dear to him are trying to give him a run for his billion dollarbank-account. Surrounded by a spoiled daughter Lisa (Marisa Tomei), his loony mobsters, a hard-nosed wife Sofia (Ornella Muti), embezzling accountant (Vincent Spano) and his language physician Dr. Poole (Tim Curry), it is amazing that he can make it through the dav without expediting someone (rubbing out). In becoming an honest mart, "Snaps" decides to become a bank "robber" baron. In other words, he wants to own a bank with his bootlegging money. At his father's request he tries to become honest and restore his families honor against all odds. bankers, though, have a hard time believing that "Snaps" has jumped off the wagon and onto the bankroll. And the cops see his new enterprise as just another step up in the echelon of the mafia stairwell. "Snaps" is just beginning to see that honesty sometimes isn't always the best policy. Especially if everyone else wants to sit in your money pocket. "Oscar" is a classical comedy farce and I stress the word farce. It has everything that brings a farce to life from punch lines to slapstick. It even has two sappy lovers, Tim Curry and Marisa Tomeii. It causes me to be a little nauseous though when I hear one too many "honeys" and "loves," and the batting of their eyelids, as if they have nothing else to do but fawn over each other. Marisa Tomeii's acting was especially overdone. Sylvester Stallone's sarcastic UCU Urtti -n.jn h$0Sm &'T Vou IZBAD1 ) ft J ' (DIO VOO WATCH Z' T LAST N3HT ? He has given a new meaning to the word farce and he played it to the hilt. The scenery in "Oscar," set in the early 1 930' s during the prohibition period was very authentic. They had everything from flaming 6yJayStoeckC by Bill Watterson 5-9 0 ..A red carpet down to the white spats on "Snaps" shoes that fit the time period perfectly. I L she knows how to make her talent work (her acting talent that is). In "Oscar" you begin to understand when "Snaps" says that "You learn to do unto others before they do unto you." In the case of "Snaps," he knows how to use his "golden rule" very effectively. |
