Lieutnant governor discourages students against conformity By Joyce Zabriskie Senior reporter of 7he Signpost Lt. Gov. W. Val Oveson challenged students to consider using their accounting knowledge in public service and encouraged them to break the mold of conformity during a lecture Thursday. He was guest speaker of the executive lecture series sponsored by the Weber State College of Business.Oveson, who has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Brigham Young University, has served four years as the Utah State auditor. In 1985 he was elected to serve as lieutenant governor. He has his own accounting firm in Orem, Utah. Oveson said that the federal government is experiencing a major crisis of a budgeting process that has completely lost control. He said the lack of an accounting system has led to poor financial management.Oveson cautioned students to gain knowledge in the world economy and emerging changes that are taking place. He said businesses today look at a student who isn't just knowledgeable in accounting but in the liberal arts and foreign language. "Don't fool yourself in thinking that accounting is all you need (See OVESON page 2) After 48 years, veteran returns home from WWII Weber State graduate buried Saturday By Joyce Zabriskie Senior reporter of The Signpost At a time when America is welcoming home heroes from the Persian Gulf, the remains of a World War II soldier who was missing in action for 48 years returned home last week. Winslow G. Gardner's plane was shot down over New Guinea, June 1, 1943. He was a graduate of Weber State College in 1941, where he served as student body treasurer, a member of the Phoenix Philharmonic Club, and on the staffs of the student activities committee and Scribulus, the forerunner of today's Metaphor. As recently reported by the Standard-Examiner, Gardner and his mates had flown 40 missions near New Guinea, known then as New Britain, and were looking for-(See VETERAN page 2) Speaker offers insights into stress reduction By Lisa hey Asst. News editor of The Signpost Psychological hardiness is the most "teachable" element in combatting stress, said Tim Burns, consultant and author, who spoke at Thursday's Convocation. He discussed how service can play an important role in stress reduction. Burns, who wrote "Anatomy of a Crisis: The Effects of Alcohol and Other Drugs on the Growing Brain, Mind and Spirit," said psychological hardiness is our "interior or attitudinal concept that concerns us in the face of challenge." He believes that the most important element in stress reduction is how we are involved in the world- making a difference through service. "Service is a joyful expression of who you uniquely are," he said. This difference that we can make in the world is the essence of our own "personal power," he said. "Personal power is the ability to discover truth and create a life vision around it and live the vision over time." Burns said that it is this vision that will compel us to make a difference. According to Burns, our personal power stems from six sources: Commitment "It comes from the life vision that is strong," said Burns.
