They started with their commitment to a cappella vocal performance. Although unaccompanied, vocal music has been virtually absent from the pop landscape since thel950s heyday for doo-wop. The Nylons have concentrated on perfecting their high-wire vocal acrobatics with only the occasional drum machine accompaniment. The group started by performing for parties thrown by their fellow actors. When a guest at one bash proved to be the owner of a new club, they were invited to appear at the cabaret's official opening. Their popularity grew instantaneously and spread to sell-out crowds in Europe, Australia and Japan. Their recognition in the United States was slow in coming. Helping turn the tide has been the quartet's move to Windham Hill's Open Air label, which released their American debut, One Size Fits All, as its maiden album in 1985. Since then, The Nylons have successively stepped up their popularity with their second album, Seamless, and their latest release, Happy Together. 1 v v - - .... .... . frmi"'-"-' " 1 v .. -. .3 . -r ; i f : A i - --t.tt if- a Dr. Olene Smith Walker Director, Salt Lake Education Foundation Keith W.
