Show Basketball 7 mind that he will be successful at the Division I level." Glenn is another Mattatuck College product who averaged 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the field this season for the Chiefs. "Calvin is a very consistent player," said Ruderman. "He always seemed to come up with the big plays. When we needed a steal, he got it, when we needed a rebound, he got it and is a spectacular leaper and dunker. His leaping ability is no story. He has a documented 41 -inch vertical leap. He only played with us for one year, but was respected enough to be elected a team captain along with Moochie Cobb." Glenn averaged 19.7 points per game and led his Sacred Heart High School team to the 1984 Connecticut 3M state championship. He played one season at Quinnipiac College before transferring to Mattatuck. He earned First Team All-Connecticut State Juco honors and was Honorable Mention All New-England. Glenn has the outside shooting ability to play the off-guard, but the jumping ability and strength to also play the small forward position. Gorder comes to Weber State after playing one season at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon. A tremendous outside shooter, he averaged 23.9 points per game, hitting 89-170 from three-point range Signpost Thursday, April 30, 198 11 from pKi" V) (.523) and 83 percent from the tree throw line. Gorder had games of 40 points vs. North Idaho and 38 vs. Utah Tech. In the North Idaho contest, he hit 8-10 three-point shots. He was the leading scorer and free throw shooter in Region 18 which included the College of Southern Idaho, the 1987 National Junior College champions. "Ed is a tremendoi.s shooter from the outside, but was also the player who brought the ball down the court against pressure," said Gary Farnworth, his coach at Treasure Valley. "His biggest asset is he has the ability to get himself open and has a very quick release. Many people at Weber State remember Kenny Owens at Idaho. Well, Ed broke his single-season scoring record and single-game scoring record here at Treasure Valley." Gorder played his high school ball at Snake River High in Moreland, Idaho where in 1985, he was the Idaho Class 2A Player of the Year and led his team to the state championship. Washington was one of the top 10 high school players in America in 1983. He played at Ben Franklin High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, leading the team to a 27-3 record. One of his teammates was a sophomore guard named Jerome "Pooh" Richardson, now at UCLA. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the Dapper Dan High School All-Star Classic, scoring 28 points and hauling in 15 rebounds playing against the likes of Reggie Williams, Pearl Washington, Antoine Joubert and Ricky Winslow. Washington signed with Nevada Las-Vegas out of high school, but did not attend. Instead, he played two seasons at Gloucester County College in Sewell, New Jersey. During his freshman year, he averaged 18 points and nine rebounds and upped those figures during his sophomore year to 22 points and 12 rebounds. In the 1986 NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, he had the high rebounding game of the Tournament with 18. "Rico is a tough player 15 feet and in," said his coach at Gloucester, Ron "Fang" Mitchell. "He has tremendous hands in catching the ball, passing it and shooting it in at close range. But his most noticeable talent is rebounding. If the shot is missed, he usually gets it at either end. He's proven he can play against anybody. As" a junior in high school he scored 37 points against Billy Thompson (Louisville and now L.A. Laker star) in a high school tournament game in the Philadelphia Spectrum in front of 15,000 fans." Washinton's quickness allows him to play both at the strong forward as well as the center postion. The signings bring a total of eight new faces to the Wildcat basketball program next season. Players who signed early letters in November were: Timmy Gibbs, a 6-3 junior guard, from Kings Rivers JC. Gibbs ended the 1986-87 season averaging 25.6 points and over five assists per game, earning First Team California Junior College honors. Fred Rollin, a 6-3 junior, forwardguard, from Lassen JC, averaged 14 points and six rebounds per game, helping the Cougars to a 20-11 season. He was second team All-Golden Valley Conference Selection. Anthony McGowan, a 6-8 freshman forwardcenter, who led his Duarte (California) High School team to a 16-10 mark and the Mission Valley League championship and was the league MVP. McGowan averaged 19.9 points, 13.1 rebounds and had single games highs of 30 points vs. Crescenta Valley and 25 rebounds vs. Burbank. Danny Price, a 6-3 freshman guard, who led his Santa Monica (California) High School team to a 20-10 mark overall and the 4A CIF Southern Section championship. He averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists per game and was the Co-MVP of the Ocean League which includes Inglewood, Hawthorne, Culver City, Beverly Hills and Mira Costa High Schools. n L n r7R RENT APARTMENT for rent, one or two bedroom, newly remodeled, close to downtown.
