Jennifer Ingalls Staff Reporter Snowbird resort is known to attract thousands of skiers who come from all over to try out the snow on its slopes, and relax, dine or dance in its comfortable lodges. This year there has been a new addition to the family of lodges: the new Cliff Lodge, which has been a success in attracting not only skiers to its interiors, but artists from all over the state of Utah, including five from WSC. The Cliff Lodge Inaugural Exhibition, which opened in December, celebrates the work of Utah artists during the inaugural year of the new building. Nine levels of the hotel are adorned with the various works of art, ranging from photography and printmaking to drawing, painting and mixed media. Although there is a lot of abstract work in the exhibition, landscape imagery is predominant. The works of WSC's own photography instructors, Michael Herbert and Kurt Fishback, are among the many impressive color and black and white photographs exhibited. One of Weber's painting and graphic instructors, Jim Jacobs' acrylic on canvas and wood, is also included with the exceptional paintings in the show. All artwork was juried by Suzanne Folds McCullough, associate curator of prints and drawings of the Art Institute of Chicago. "I was truly amazed by the strength and serious nature of the over 800 works gathered in very short time for the competition I. carefully reviewed the candidates four to five times, honing the selection to 154 works by 123 artists," The Wilderness Recreation Center is having a Outdoor quipment Sale! The exhibition is managed by the Utah Arts Council and the Snowbird Institute for the Arts and Humanities, in cooperation with Richard Bass, owner of Snowbird, who worked together to raise $50,000 in purchase awards. Forty works were purchased by the Cliff Lodge and will become part of their Utah Collection. Mark Biddle, graphic design instructor at WSC, received two purchase awards for his two entries of mixed media. M.Ray Kingston, vice president of FFKR architectsplanners, is the man who got this exhibit started. "As someone practicing in the field of architecture, I am committed to the idea that the realization of the full potential of building and environmental design extends toward the integration of the work of other artists," he said. Kingston decided to decorate the lodge with original quality artwork by Utahns rather than leaving it up to an interior decorator to decide what to put on the walls. "This exhibition speaks to our artists, not only of their importance, but of the great value their work plays in the development of a fully-rounded, private, commercially-oriented project," Kingston said. "Public comments on the exhibit have been positive, and people are amazed that the artwork is by Utahns," said Montague. "We've had many inquiries on the work, and so far we've sold 10 pieces to one man from New York," he continued. The exhibit ends May 3, 1987; however, the purchased pieces will continue to hang throughout the lodge for the public's enjoyment. o M MX Concert IN THE U.B.
