Track team competes in meet Weber State's men's track team will compete in a three-way meet tomorrow in Pocatello, Idaho. WSC Coach Chick Hislop's Wildcat runners will line-up against teams from Idaho State and Montana State. The three-way meet is the final meet of the regular season for Weber State and will serve as a warm-up to the Big Sky Conference Championships on May 23-24 in Moscow, Idaho. by Matthew Madsen Staff Reporter Weber State, trying to take home its 14th championship in the last 15 years, ran up against a stubborn Nevada-Reno team in the 21st Big Sky Conference Golf Championships at the Lewiston Country Club. Nevada-Reno used a surge of birdies on the last holes of the final round for a six-stroke victory and its second Big Sky title in the last three years. The Wolfpack led the tourney from start to finish, with the Wildcats right on their tails the whole way. Going into the final round on Saturday, it had boiled down to a two-team race between Reno and Weber. Nevada-Reno led by six strokes as the teams began the final 18 holes of play. Weber state made a strong comeback to tie the Wolfpack after 13 holes. Going into the last two holes, Reno's number one and two players both birdied the 17th and 18th holes to make the difference, giving Nevada-Reno the championship. Weber head coach Mac Madsen felt that both teams played well, but Reno just played six strokes better. "The Lewiston course was not designed to the strength of our team. We play better on longer and more demanding courses. Lewiston Country Club is a short game (wedge and putter) type of course. Reno adapted quicker than we did. They led all the way and deserved to win," Madsen said. Madsen also pointed out that the Wildcats also had the added pressure of an NCAA bid on the line. Weber is currently tied with New Mexico for the third and final spot, which determines who will join BYU and UTEP in representing District VII at the NCAA championships. "Going by the criteria the NCAA set, we still think our case is solid and we deserve an NCAA berth. " Mac Madsen Madsen feels the Wildcats still deserve an NCAA invitation. "Going by the criteria the NCAA set, we still think our case is solid and we deserve an NCAA berth. New Mexico has played well in its last two tournaments, but overall we have New Mexico beat." However, Nevada-Reno had Weber State beat this weekend. Reno's Steve Watson coasted to a five-shot victory in the medalist race with a five-under-par 54-hole total of 211. Teammate Robert Willis finished second at 216. Weber State's Paul Muller shot 218 to finish right where he did in last year's event third place. One stroke behind Muler at 219 was Weber's Glen Spencer. Other Weber scores included Carito Villaroman, 221 (sixth); Bobby Romero, 222 (eighth); Miguel Tola, .228 (18th). Final team standings were 1. Nevada-Reno, 869; 2. Weber State, 875; 3. Idaho, 892; 4. Boise State, 893; 5. Montana, 919; 6. Idaho State, 934. HELP WANTED FOR SALE ACT NOW!! DISKETTES Bulk 5 - 14" DSDD. 39 cents each.
