We can make it to the road in a home-made boat, Cuz that's the only thing we got left that'll float, It's already over all the wheat and oats, Two feet high and rising. How high's the water, mama? Three feet high and rising. Well, our hives are gone, I bet I lost my bees, The chickens are sleeping in the willow trees, Cows in water up past their knees, Three feet high and rising. How high's the water, mama? Fow feet high and rising. Hey, come look through the window pane, The bus is coming, gonna take us to the train, Looks like we'll be blessed with a little more rain, Four feet high and rising. Johnny Cash The above is an excerpt from Johnny Cash's semi-popular song, "How High's the Water, Mama?" I feel the lyrics are particularly fitting to the Salt Lake area about this time. In keeping with the tradition of prayer and fasting, I am contributing my own lyrical talents to the cause. The people of Salt Lake and surrounding environs should feel free to use the following words to their best advantage (in letters to their congressmen, town hall meetings, etc.). I would even consider letting them use this words as a 'fight song.' A song can be of great use when spirits are soggy, damp or waterlogged. Groups need a rallying point, a slogan to march with, and I would be honored to submit this song for their consideration (for a small fee, of course). I've already got a spot lined up on David Letter-man's show and will be singing my re-make of Johnny Cash's song a week from Friday, unless my boat capsizes on the way to the airport. "How High's the Water, Norman?" How high's the water, Norman? Well, it's 4,211 feet high and rising. We can make it to the polls if we don 't rock the boat, Don 't worry about the seagulls, they can float, We have to get the pump past the legislature's vote, 4.211 feet high and rising. How high's the water, Norman? , It's 4,212 feet high and rising. Our crops are gone, I bet I lost my corn, The Democrats are gone, and we're worried about porn, Buffalo on the Island are stranded and forlorn, 4.212 feet high and rising. How high's the water, Norman? 4.213 high and rising. Hey come look through my helicopter pane, The causeway's sinking, ain't this a pain, Look's like we'll be blessed with a little more rain, 4.213 high and rising. How high's the water, Norman? 4.214 high and rising. Well, the airport's underwater north of town, Water's spilling over onto desert ground, The tourists are leaving 'till the lake goes down, 4,214 high and rising. Committee performed well Nurse urges response To the editor: We would like to present a rebuttal to the letter by Lanny Desmond that appeared in the Signpost Friday, May 9. First off, we congratulate and thank you for showing up and helping with the Special Olympics Games. We feel your letter was somewhat unfair to those who took the time to plan and organize these games. For general information, both of this year's studentbody vice presidents (Mike Waldron and Kelly Miles) were in attendance and volunteered their time to make these games one of the best area games that Weber has sponsored. We personally worked with people from Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Gamma Chi, Lambda Delta's, Kappa Alpha Psi, Signpost, current and future student senators, among other caring students of Weber State. We were very highly involved, informed and impressed with the job Cori Leishman and her committee did in sponsoring the Special Olympic Games. From this experience, we are planning to volunteer and support Weber State's Special Olympic team in the state track and field games that will be held on the BYU campus, May 30 and 31. Steve Brooks Terry Allen Jennifer Hunter WSC students Sandinistas dealings naive To the editor: The Nicaraguan representative mentioned that the Soviet Union indeed is supporting the Sandinistas by evidence of Soviet troops and weapons currently in Nicaragua. But looking back at history, whenever a country took on help or aid from the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union manipulated their governments. What makes the Sandinistas think that the Soviet Union won't want their backs scratched in the future? 1 believe that the Nicaraguan government is heading toward Marxism, and if they believe that they won't be manipulated by the Soviet Union, they had better take another look. Jim C. Puffer WSC Student To the editor: Apparently the passage of House Bill 180 through the House and Senate of our 19S6 Utah Legislature and the signing of the bill by Governor Norm Bangerter on March 17, 1986, did not deter our opponents who are covertly trying to get through the next legislative session one level only of nursing education available in Utah the Bachelor of Science in nursing, or BSN. Our opponents fail to see that the New York Legislature has thrown out such proposed legislation from 1976 through 1986; that West Virginia, Oregon and now Utah have now blocked such changes in nursing; and, that the one state who has the American Nurses Association's proposal in place, North Dakota, will probably have th.-t reversed by lawsuit. Many states are proposing these sweeping changes in nursing, but that does not mean they will pass their state legislatures. Come on, Utah Nursing grassroots! ANA has only 12.5 percent of RN's in the United States as members. Utah Nurses Association has 700-800 members out of 1,400 RN's in the state with LPN's less than 5,000; not all licensed are working nurses. Do you want administrative minorities and ivory-touered small educator groups dictating if you will be able to afford study, get licensed or work, or not, and where? Do you want them to influence or make decisions affecting you without your impact studies completed, and, (1 should think) required impact studies completed for Utah, and compilation of cost, country-wide urban and rural reserch completed, and shared, with legislators? Let's be heard! Please write your ANA, UNA, congressmen and Utah State legislators they hear you! And write to me. I have been elected vice chair of the Practical Nurse Educator's Council of NAPNES (National Association of Practical Nurse Education and Service) and we will help see to it that all interested and important groups undrstand both pro and con on the issue of proposed changes in entry leveel into nursing and that they reflect your decision.
