Show 12 Signpost-Tuesday, May 7, 1985 Lady tracksters perform well in two high- powered meets by Steve Spafford Sports Editor It was a busy week for the Lady Cat" track team as they competed in two big meets. Thursday, they were in Pro-vo competing in the BYU Invitational and Saturday they were in California competing in the New Balance Cal-Irvine Invitational. Thursday's meet had teams from BYU, Utah and Utah State competing, while Saturday's meet had representatives from 25 colleges and track clubs, mainly from the Southern California area. Paula Pettingill was one Lady Wildcat who did well in both meets. Pettingill won the BYU meet and finished third in California. She cleared 5-7 to win Thursday and jumped 5-9 for her third-place finish Saturday. "Paula didn't miss a height Thursday until 5-10," women's coach Jim Blaisdell said. "Saturday, she didn't miss until they put the bar at the national qualifying mark of 5-11 12, and she had a good attempt on her last one at 5-11 12. f - Jr $ Signpost photoSteve Spafford Sharon Anderson (far right) shown here Invitational and set a school record with her winning the 100-meter hurdles at the BYU time of 14.89. -THANKS-E TO ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORTED US Todd Anderson Mike Waldron Kelly Miles jy SELF-SERVE -"" FAST, FRIENDLY SERVICE. STEWART LIBRARY MAIN LOBBY - OPEN LIBRARY HOURS Hurdler Sharon Anderson looks like she is fully recovered from her fall earlier in the year. Thursday, she won the 100-meter hurdles and set a new school record with her time of 14.89. Her time Saturday was basically the same but she finished 11th out of 25 entrants in the hurdles. The race was won by Pam Page of the Los Angeles Track Club in 13.44. Page finished fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials last year. Mari Green had a good two meets as she came from behind to win the 1,500-meters over one a BYU's top distance runners Thursday with her time of 4:43.92. Saturday she was eighth in the 3,000-meters in 10:09.27. Connie Washington ran well at both meets as she finished second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 12.36 and 24.54. Those times are Washington's best this year. She also placed sixth in both the 400-meters (56.6) and the 200-meters (25.14). Valynn Spafford appears to be running well as she had her best times of the year. Her times of 12.36 and 25.05 were good enough for fourth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meters, respectively Thursday. Spafford placed ninth in the 100-meters (12.37) and ninth in the 200-meters (25.52) at Irvine. "Valynn has got herself on track and she looked good," Blaisdell said. "She's ready to go. She ran her second fastest 200 (25.05) and her only faster one was with a gale at her back." Michelle Green had a 15 second personal best in the 5,000-meters in California. Her time of 17:13.82 was good enough for second place. She then came back and finished fifth in the 3,000-meters in a time of 10:02.81. "It was a good double for her," Blaisdell added. Jacki Dowdy had her best time of the year Saturday as she finished third in the 5,000-meters with her time of 18:05.60. Camille Tueller also had a good double in Califronia. She finished sixth in the 1,500-meters in 4:33.17 and then came back and set a new school record in the 800-meters with her sixth-place time of 2:11.43. The 1,500-meters was won by Olympian Ruth Wysocki in 4:14.31. Tina McCombs won the triple jump at BYU with her best jump of the year (36-03) and she placed second in the long jump with her leap of 18-12. She jumped 18-5 12 at Irvine and placed sixth and she was also eighth in the tri ple jump (35-5 34.) The 4xl00-meter relay team of Spafford, Anderson, McCombs and Washington finished second at BYU (47.93) and fourth at Irvine (48.39) The Lady Cats will now prepare for the MWAG outdoor conference meet which will be held May 17-18 in Boise in conjunction with the Big Sky conference meet. "Conference is really heating up," Blaisdell said. "This is the most balanced conference meet there has been. Four or five teams have girls who are performing well and it's going to be a close meet. We will get the mental attitude ready to go and get some people healthy." WILDERNESS RECREATION CENTER Presents OUTDOOR WEEK EXTRAVAGANZA MAY 21-24 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. U.B.
