Business School departments to combine by Dana Hanson Contributing Writer The School of Business and Economics will be consolidating the departments of Marketing, Finance and Management effective summer quarter, 1985, according to Dean Allen F. Simkins. Consolidation will better meet the needs of the students, he said. "Our students are different from those attending traditional large business schools, yet the curriculum at Weber State has been patterned after programs of larger schools in the nation." Our graduates are different in the sense that they seek employment locally, and we should be preparing them for employment in small business instead of large corporations, he added. One of the reasons for the consolidation, said Simkins, is to be more efficient in utilization of faculty. The School of Business has faculty members who have knowledge in areas where they are not presently teaching. Combining the departments will allow faculty to share with students a diversity of expertise that is otherwise unavailable because of departmental restrictions. Simkins said that economic factors were also a consideration in the reorganization. The newly formed department will be adequately served by one department chairman and one full-time secretary. The elimination of a department chair and a secretary will mean a substantial saving to the School of Business and Economics. "We do not want to reduce student opportunities," said Simkin. "Therefore, course offerings will be maintained and the number of faculty will not change." In order to offer students a program which will meet their specific needs, he said, the school will continue to eliminate programs which have no demand. If student demand is high enough, faculty will be increased, as in the Computer Information Systems Department. This department has already increased its faculty by one because of high student demand. The mission statement of the School of Business and Economics states that the role of the college is to provide quality undergraduate instruction to a studentbody that is mainly com-munter, relatively immobile, employed, and with significant disparity in age. Simkins said, "We want to provide quality instruction by giving students the best possible education while meeting their specific needs."
