Show 12 Signpost-Friday, May 4, 1984 Center Plans Outing Dates by Blaine Child Sports Reporter For all you outdoor wilderness enthusiasts, there are great things in store for you through the Wilderness Recreational Center in the way of supplies and trips. The director of the center, Nancy Stephenson, says there are many new supplies which have been ordered and will be able to be purchased. At the present, they are mainly renting outdoor equipment. Students, faculty, staff and alumni with alumni cards are able to order specialty items through such compaines as Jansport, North Face, Wilderness Experience, and the popular Vaurent Glass Company. Also, climbing gear, tents, packs, outdoor clothing and many other outdoor supplies can be purchased at a discount price with a current student-body card. Stephenson is now looking at recruits for trip leader positions, assistant trip leaders, and outdoor committee positions. These recruits will be trained to help participants on the "Be There" adventures. There will also be a support staff for anyone that wants to be involved with the Wilderness Recreation organization. Trip leaders will have the benefits of their travel being paid for, and assistants will have at least 50 percent of their travel paid for. Four people will be chosen for the outdoor committee and they will receive added discounts on purchases as compared to the student's discount. May 3-5 will be a desert leadership hiking trip, which will cost $38.99 to cover the food, transportation, guides and training. Anyone interested may contact Stephenson before May 2 at the Wilderness Recreation Center at 626-6373. There will be a leadership orientation seminar May 16, room 352, in the Union Building at 7-9 p.m. Over the Memorial day weekend, May 25-28, there will be another desert hiking trip. For summer outdoor fun, there will be windsurfing, canoeing, backpacking, caving, river-rafting, bicycling and rock climbing clinics. During July 13-14 there will be an overnighter at Flaming Gorge with inflatable Kayaks. July 20-21, there will be a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to raft on the Snake River. July 24-28, the recreation center will sponsor a canoe trip down the Green River. Aug. 13-18, the center will sponsor a backpacking trip into the Grand Tetons. There will be a bicycle trip to Oregon and down the Oregon coast for applicants, but the time is not set as of yet. Aug.27 through Sept. 1, a High Uintahs backpacking trip is planned. From Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, you might rather be canoeing in the Lee Lake area of the Grand Tetons. And Sept. 10-15, an exciting river raft trip down the Salmon river that won't leave you up the creek with nothing to do is being planned. To give you an idea of the good deals you can receive through the Wilderness Recreation program, most of the river trips will only cost about $125. , Weber State student Doug Bytendorp hangs on for dear life as he rides the mechanical bull during competition in the intramural departments Cowboy Week activities.
