If the everyday rigors of life are too much, the Weber State College Counseling Center has a machine that can drain away your troubles. Actually, the electrodes that attach to your arms, hands and head really don't have the power themselves to produce a peaceful nirvana, but the information they provide gives the user a chance to see what's going on inside the body so that stress and anxieties can be controlled. "Biofeedback training allows the student to see where their stress is originating from -whether it be exams, a particular class, speaking in front of people or maybe even a particular person. If we can find the source, we can help the student reduce the stress and control it," said Dr. Richard Southwick, director of the WSC Counseling Center. Dr. Southwick said that biofeedback training is the technique of making a person's unconscious or involuntary bodily processes -things such as heartbeat or brain waves perceptible to the conscious mind by use of an oscilloscope so that they can control their physical responses to stress. Once the responses are removed, stress is reduced. To use the machinery, electrodes are placed in certain muscle areas that American Heritage DicttiiOMjry Reg. $14.95 Now $10.99! Weber State Bookstore react when stress or tension is present. The amount of stress or tension can be detected by the electrodes which then send a signal to the oscilloscope. To help someone overcome stress a biofeedback trainer will ask the person to visualize a stressful situation. The person then goes through a series of relaxation exercises that helps diminish the stress. Over time the person begins to realize for hiself when stress occurs by being award of how his body reacts. "We're not head shrinkers," Dr. Southwick said. "Our main concern is for the student's health. We want competent people to become more competent."Dr. Southwick said that the center typically sees 40 to 50 students per quarter in terms of biofeedback training and is in the midst of expanding its operations to include more biofeedback machinery. They hope to soon be able to offer services to faculty, staff and community members. "It's not into full swing yet, but we expect to be fully operational by fall quarter of 1985." ; j Enjoy 4 Days and 3 Nights for Two in DISNEYLAND Anaheim, California with the purchase of a Diamond Wedding Set Quantities limited Minimum purchase $300 00 -j mm.
