Show ii4 m 1 n IS) IL n IE 14 Signpost-Friday, October 5, 1984 by Dan Dickson X t ) Here we go again! Another school year is upon us. As a person who loves sports, I think the fall is a great time of year. The World Series is just around the corner, pro and college football are in high gear. Basketball is on the horizon. There is a lot going on to keep the sports enthusiast busy. This is also a busy time of year for Weber State sports. Besides football, men's and women's cross country, golf and tennis competition has started. The basketball teams are practicing hard, as is the wrestling team, and , of course, the women's volleyball team has been playing for a month. It should be a great year for sports at Weber. I had a talk with Athletic Director, Gary Crompton, and he is very excited about the coming year. Crompton feels Weber has an excellent chance at winning the All Sports Trophy in men's sports and that the women will be contenders, also. The football team got off to a slow start but is now starting to look like a good team. Crompton believes in football coach Mike Price and gives him a vote of confidence. After eight straight losing seasons, Price has had winning seasons two of his three years at WSC. Crompton feels Weber will continue to be competitive, and in the near future can win the Big Sky Football Crown. Basketball will again be the sport that puts Weber on the map. "Our men's basketball team could be better than last year," Crompton said, "We have brought in some good new recruits, and have solid players returning up front." Weber will have a good women's basketball team this year. Coach Jane Miner has brought in a lot of new talent and she thinks they will be heard from before tje season is over. The men's and women's tennis teams are going to be the strongest since Keith Cox has been at the helm. The golf teams have a lot of young players, but they are talented and will become even better with experience. The wrestling team will again be strong and should be a favorite to win their conference. The women's volleyball team is off to a slow start. Coach Ted Compos has a lot of new faces on the team and it will still take some time to get them to mesh into a cohesive unit Weber will be competitive in both men's and women's cross-country this fall, despite a few injuries to some key runners. I am looking forward to covering the Wildcats this year, no matter what sport it is. We at the Signpost are committed to give the readers of this newspaper the best possible sports coverage. We, like most of you, are students and will make a few mistakes along the way. We will need your cooperation and help if we are going to be successfull. Wildcats will also need the support of you, the students and faculty. Let's all join in and make this the best year ever for our Wildcats. SpORTS Weber's Goal-Bag The Bobcats by Steve Spafford Asst. Sports Editor There are a lot of important games on the docket this weekend in the Big Sky Conference, but none is more important than when Weber State hosts Montana State Saturday night at Wildcat Stadium. Both teams stand 1-1 in conference play and a loss would virtually eliminate one team from winning the Big Sky crown. The Wildcats are coming off an impressive victory (47-14) over Montana. In defeating the Grizzlies the defense created five turnovers with four interceptions off of three different quarterbacks and they had one fumble recovery. The offense was then able to turn most of those turnovers into points as they were operating on all cylinders. Quarterback Kevin Villars threw for 183 yards on 14-20 passes with no interceptions. He is gaining confidence with every week. But the surprise this year for the Wildcats is their ground game. Against Montana, Weber ran the ball 57 times for 301 total yards. In past years Coach Mike Price's teams might have thrown the ball 57 times for over 300 yards and maybe only gain 300 yards rushing for the entire season. One reason why Price has Weber running the ball more this year is Villars' ability to carry the ball. Villars is the leading rusher with 69 carries for 191 net yards. Price also has an excellent group of running backs who all have had fine games this year. Wes Cooper is averaging over 5 yards per carry and he rushed for 109 yards against Portland State. Travis McClean is averaging almost 6 yards every time he carries the ball and has scored three touchdowns rushing. Gilbert Vasquez rushed for 65 yards against the University of Utah and has carried the ball 42 times for 143 yards. And Eric Brown gained 79 yards against the University of Montana in his first start of the season. Price also has a crop of promising freshman waiting in the wings. Last week Idaho State defeated Montana State at Bozeman 22-6 and eight Bobcat turnovers are the reason. MSU is averaging 318.3 yards per game through the air, but quarterback Kelly Bradley was intercepted five times by the Bengals defense. Weber State's defensive secondary has solidified, with nine interceptions the last two games, and they will need to have a good game if they hope to stop Bradley and MSU. - - 7" v 'w r- yj xt v i - f v f sJ . . 1 ' - j signpost photoMatthew Brown Weber State's Doug Orr (No. 60), puts the in Weber's 47-14 win over the Grizzlies. pressure on Montana running back No. 21 Weber plays Montana at. tomorrow night.
