Show Signpost Tuesday, May 31, 1983 11 Far Let: Brian K. Smith uses the Perkins Brailler to type class notes into braille form. The machine, much like a typewriter has keys for whole words, not single letters. Brian commented that blind students like for other students to tell them "Hi!". But it would help if they would identify themselves, and call the blind student by name. Brian says he doesn't always know if the person saying "Hi" is talking to him. Above: "It takes courage to step out of the house some days," said Pat Hashimoto. Pat has owned her guide dog, Image, for one year. The yellow Labrador Retriever and Pat trained for four weeks in California to learn the signals and commands. Many students think the dog can make decisions and protect his master. But Pat explained that she makes the decisions, and often cannot control the dog's direction. A few times he has run after other dogs, walked through mud puddles, or guided her into a tree. "This winter we had a few mishaps because he didn't know I needed to slow down on icy sidewalks.". Above Right: Helen Jensen gets around campus in her wheelchair by operating the controls with a stick held in her teeth. Here she is dialing the phone with the stick she also uses to type with. "The Center has helped me to learn to cope with handicapped people and with my own handicap." Right: Carol Jean Cruzer is using the Kurzweil Reading Machine. It is a computer that reads the printed page, then an electronic voice speaks the words. The voice, much like one on a video game is difficult to understand. However, the quality of the cassettes are constantly being updated. Carol has been on the Signpost staff all year as a Signature reporter.
