Show Wildcats lose heartbreaker to Idaho Tuesday, October 5, 1982 Page 9 Be sure to check Friday's paper for the Gridiron Game results and a new contest. In a wild see-saw battle held at Moscow, the Wildcats lost a 34-35 heartbreaker to the University of Idaho. Before the game began there was speculation that it would be a tough battle. Both teams were evenly matched, the coaching philosophy of Price and Erickson were similar and it was the Vandals' Homecoming. The game lived up to expectations, except that Weber finished with a one point deficit. The Vandals set the pace of the game only seconds into play with a tricky 80-yard TD pass from split end Ron Whittenburg to wide receiver Brian Allen. The PAT was good to make the score 7-0 with only 20 seconds ticked off the clock. Idaho's second TD came after an unsuccessful Wildcat drive. The Vandals moved the ball 81 yards in 13 plays. The PAT was no good and the score stood at 13-0. The 'Cats ended the quarter with a Ruzek field goal, which moved him into first place in career field goals at Weber, ahead of Jamie Nunez (1969-71). Before the afternoon was over, Ruzek made a second goal bringing his career total to 36. The scoreboard was dominated by Weber during the second quarter. The first of four WSC TD's was made 10 minutes into the quarter on a one-yard quarterback keep. The drive moved 72 yards in 12 plays. The PAT was good for a score of 13-10. Only moments later Kris Jugler, a Wildcat safety, intercepted a Ken Hobbart pass something that hadn't been done since last October. The 'Cats were able to move the ball up to the Vandals' seven yard line, and on a third and goal situation Bernal popped a pass to tight-end Scott Zellmer in the endzone. After a successful PAT, the Wildcats moved ahead for the first time, 17-13. The momentum of the second half was very unpredictable as it shifted back and forth between the two teams. Bernal rushed for 37 yards for a TD on the first drive of the half. It was the longest run of the season for a Weber State player. The PAT was good, widening the Wildcat margin to 23-13. The Vandals were on the board next with a touchdown and two-point conversion, narrowing the margin to five. Weber's final TD came on a short Bernal pass to Steve Brown. The Vandals scored one more time in the quarter on a drive set up by a Dennis Rogan fumble. An Idaho defender recovered the ball on the Idaho 27-yard line and it only took three plays for the Vandals to bring the ball into the endzone. In a matter of moments, Idaho had scored again-this time on an 80-yard Hobbart pass to Wallace. This drive put Idaho ahead by. a 35-31 score. The tide turned again as Weber moved the ball down to Idaho's 21 yard line. On a fourth and 11 situation with only 5:08 left on the clock, Price opted for a field goal which brought the 'Cats to within .one point. The final scoring drive was unsuccessful for Weber and the final score stood at 34-35, Vandals.
