Show Page 2 Tuesday, October 5, 1982 1 College named a beneficiary A former Weber State College student has named her alma mater as major beneficiary in her life insurance policy. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, arranged for the WSC department of gerontology to recieve $50,000 in the event of her death. She stipulated that the money be used to set up an en dowment in the names of her mother and father. Don Spainhower, WSC director of development, said "Naming a charity as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy is one way a person can make a substantial contribution, while at the same time the charity avoids much of the 'red tape' which so often accompanies bequests." He said, "Gifts of life insurance enable a donor to give much more than possible at present and provide a meaningful and satisfying gift to future students at the college." He noted that life in surance is a favorite means of charitable giving for several reasons. "The death benefit going to the charity is guaranteed as long as the premiums are paid." he said "This means that the charity will receive a fixed amount which has not been subject to downside risks of securities." Spainhower noted "Life insurance provides an amplified gift that can be purchased on the installment plan. By paying a relatively small premium, a large benefit can be given to the charity." Spainhower also mentioned tax benefits associated with this type of giving. He said "Death proceeds can be recieved free from federal income and estate taxes, probate and administrative costs." He noted that "Through this method of giving, the donor is able to enjoy a sense of extreme accomplishment since his ultimate contribution would be substantial."
