Show Signpost September26,1980 page 13 Ladv 'Cats Win on Road Weber Harriers to Host Wildcat Invitational The Lady Wildcats volleyball team is participating in the BYU Invitational Tournament in Provo this weekend. The 20-team tournament, which began on Thursday and will run until tomorrow, includes such schools as Utah State, Texas A & M, Lamar, and others. The Lady Wildcats were on the road last week in Montana and Idaho and returned with eight wins and two losses. This puts their season record at 8-3 so far. The 1980 squad returns nine experienced players from last year's squad. Joining them are three freshman players. Coach George Miles, now in his third season at Weber State, is optimistic about this Intramural Play To Start Thurs Intramural action will begin next week with entries due on Wednesday, Oct. 1, for flag football and two-man 'best ball' golf. These deadlines are for both men and women. Play will begin on Thursday, Oct. 2, for men's flag football; Monday, Oct 6, for women's flag football; and Tuesday, Oct. 7, for golf. Other activities slated for fall quarter include: tennis, bike race, volleyball, racquet-ball singles, archery, marksmanship, bowling, foul pitch and hot shot, and the popular Turkey Trot and Holiday Basketball Tourney. Participants are reminded that there have been some changes in the intramural program for this year. One change is the addition of participation fees. There will be a $10 team fee, $2 doubles fee, and a $1 individual fee charged for this year's activities. These fees will go towards improving the program, as well as shirts or gym shorts given out to winners of both the recreational and championship league. All students are encouraged to participate. "We are . looking good in defense and will have a more potent offense this year. So far, our practices are a lot further ahead than they were at this time last year. One standout on this year's squad is freshman Karen Nielsen. Karen played at Provo High last year, earning all-state honors and playing in the state volleyball championships. "Karen is a very good player for a freshman," said Coach Miles. "She is a good jumper, and was one of the best high school players in the state last year. We are proud to have her playing for us this year. The Wildcats open their 1980 Cross Country season this Saturday when they host the Weber State Cross Country Invitational. The five mile race is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. at Schneiters Riverside Golf Course. Teams that will be competing against Weber State include: Utah, Utah State, Southern Utah State and the College of Eastern Utah. The Wildcats, under the direction of Coach Chick Hislop, finished second in the 1979 Big Sky Conference Cross Country championships. In a pre-season coaches poll Weber was picked to do the same in 1980. Brian Appel and Rex Hohnholt are juniors, with sophomore Ron Davis and freshman Tom Hanselman rounding out the field for WSC in Saturday's race. "We Should be considered the favorite since it is our home course," said Coach Hislop. "But I expect a strong challenge from Utah and Utah Women Runners 1st Weber State's Women's cross country team achieved it highest finish ever when they finished in first place in the Montana State Invitational held last Saturday in West Yellowstone, Mont. Weber' s Carmen Garduno, from Mexico, took first place Member FDIC II II State." This will be the Wildcats only home Cross Country meet of 1980, and will be their first match, although a partial squad appeared in the Five-Star Invitational 10,000-meter run in Salt Lake City two weeks ago. Top Wildcat finisher in that event was Paul Pilkington. Paul finished second behind world-renowned runner Herb Lindsey with a time of 31:12. with a time of 17:45.3. Other Weber runners placing high were: Jackie Arnold, 19.09.3; Patty Huff, 20.13.0; Laura Camp, 20.17.0; Janet Williams, 20:19.6. The women's team will be in action in the Wildcat Invitational tomorrow. J |
