Show May 12, 1978 Signpost Van' 9 Bike-A-Thon set Student Summer at Library The American Cancer Society has announced a Bike-A-Thon to be held Saturday, May 20 from 9 to 10 a.m. in Lorin Farr Park, on 12th Street. It will begin at the west end of the park and continue from the park north to 12th Street, down 12th (highway 39) to the end of the Little Mountain Road and return. The distance is 30 miles round trip. Participants can ride any part or all of the route. Transportation will be provided for bikes and people from any point on the course back to the Park. The route is selected for smooth terrain, sparse traffic and a panoramic view of the Great Salt Lake. Free Refreshments will be served at each rest stop an check points. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the American Cancer Society for cancer research, public education programs, etc. Participants should obtain pledge sheets, which can be found at local merchants displaying BIKE-A-THON posters, or from the American Cancer Society office located in the old Ogden Clinic Building across the street from the Ogden High football field on Harrison Blvd. telephone 393-1110. Riders then solicit pledges for definite amounts per mile ridden. Pledges may be obtained from anyone. (Friends, relatives, business, etc.) Success is determined by total contributions-miles ridden times total pledge per mile. The BIKE-A-THON IS not a race. Speed is not a factor. There is no age lmit, but riders under 8 years old should be accompanied by a responsible adult. All cyclists of all ages are encouraged to come and pedal for fun, exercise, prizes, and the grandest prize of all to help wipe out cancer in our life time. Prizes will be awarded to everyone who participates. 1st Place 10-speed bikes will be awarded in 3 age groups, 18 & over, 12-17, and under 11. awards The Weber State College Art Department has announced the winners of the annual student exhibition in the Art Department Gallery. The show will run until May 31, and was highlighted Wednesday at noon with the awards presentation for the exhibition and the Outstanding Art Students Awards. Judges of the stuent exhibtion were Mark Anderson and Robert McCall from Salt Lake City. First, second, and third prizes were $25, $20, and $15 respectively. There were also five honorable mention awards given. Media represented were ceramics, photography, sculpture, jewelry, watercolor and oil paintings, acrylics, textiles, print-making and drawings. First place winner, Darrell Warner, water color; second place, Jimmie Owens, photo-etching; third, Curt Harris, Ceramics. Honorable mention awards went to Sid Furlong, jewelry, Gail James, silk-screen; Jeri Kelly, watercolor; Curt Harris, ceramics; and Clyde Mueller, photography. The series entitled "Future Odyssey: The Quality of Life in the Future" will explore the possible changes in our future society and what we can do to help make the changes the way we want them. Each program will feature a brief presentation based on science fiction and then a panel of experts will discuss whether the ideas presented in the presentation can really come true. The programs will start on June 13, at 7 P.M. n the main library's auditorium at 2464 Jefferson Avenue and will continue throughout the summer every other Tuesday evening.
