Shop makes scenes The WSC Scene Shop is one of the key "Behind the Scenes" activities in any Theater Department production here. The head of the Scene Shop is Scott Jensen, Technical Director of the WSC Theater Department. Besides being head of the scene shop, his many duties include set design, lighting design, and teaching the technical theater classes. He has been at Weber State for four years. Jensen was in charge of set construction for the recent WSC production of "The Mikado." Four weeks of construction went into producing the "Mikado" set. Jensen termed it a "Unit Set," with one full stage set used for the entire play. Most of the labor was done by Theater Department students. Some of the features were the stone walls. They were 2' x 8' sheets of styrofoam, heat cut and painted grey. The cherry blossoms were each made by hand and individually tied to the branches. Many of the hand props were made by the scene shop including one scroll which Jensen said, "took hours to make." With the exception of one mistake with the computerized lighting system on opening night, the work on the "Mikado" went very smoothly. Deadlines and time schedules are an important factor in set production and often cause frayed nerves and short tempers. The Scene Shop produces three main stage sets a year. For the first time this year, the smaller scale sets for the Little Theater productions have been built on a lab session basis. The students designed and built the sets for more practical expedience. The Scene Shop welcomes anyone who is interested to help out. The only prerequisite is plenty of time. WSC takes Sixth Five Weber State College students recently picked up several top placings at the Big Sky Conference Forensic meet. Twenty-four colleges and universities participated in the event at Missoula, Montana. In competition with 63 entrants, Patricia Gonzales placed first and Fred Diehl placed third in dramatic interpretation. In the Lincoln-Douglas debating contest, Mike Krenn placed second. Krenn was the first speaker in the debate division, having gained the highest total number of points in the contests, said John Hebestreet, WSC debate coach. Dan Sparkman placed fourth in organizational communications. It was a new contest this year and was introduced by the University of Montana. It dealt with communication problems. In the over-all competition, Weber State placed sixth among the twenty-four schools represented. THEIR TURN!
