Help available for divorced students by Rex Leetham If you are one of the many divorced students or faculty members here at WSC, the Counseling Center's Divorce Group may be of interest to you, According to Mary Jo LaTulippe, counselor, the Divorce Group is made up of divorced students and faculty members, both male and female, whose ages range from 19 to mid 40's. She said the purpose of the group is to help ease the pains of divorce by "discussing the different phases of divorce and areas of interest to the divorced person." The main advantage of the Divorce Group, LaTulippe said, is that "It helps divorced people realize that members of the opposite sex have feelings, pains, lack of self-confidence and helps them realize that the feelings they are having are not exclusive to themselves." Women learn that men also have emotional feelings about divorce, and they are just as afraid of being rejected as the woman is, she added. LaTulippe stressed that the "Divorce Group is not a dating situation." She said dating is a problem for many divorced people, and they feel uncomfortable when placed in such a situation. Last year the group used a selected self-help reading program developed by Reference Librarian. Ruth Hunter. The program is called Bibliotherapy. According to LaTulippe, members of the Divorce Group gave IT DOESN'T TAKE THREE YEARS OF LAW SCHOOL FOR A CAREER IN LAW The School of Paralegal Studies at the University of West Los Angeles offers a program for college graduates interested in a career in law but not wanting to spend three or four years in law school. At the University of West Los Angeles, the Certificate as a Paralegal Specialist in Probate, Litigation, Real Estate or Corporations may be earned in only one semester of day study. The School of Paralegal Studies maintains a successful placement staff whose sole responsibility is to place our graduates with law firms, governmental agencies, corporations, and other organizations needing personnel trained in the law. The reports were then video taped and have since been used in other Bibliotherapy workshops. The reports all related to problems facing divorced people, therefore, they can also be shown in other Divorce Group meetings. The group also deals with single parent problems, LaTuliippe added. Communication skills between parent-child and husband-wife are also discussed. LaTulippe said that many times the divorced person will be afraid to try and enjoy new experiences for fear of failing. She said members of the group "learn that to have something good happen, they must risk having something bad happen." "An interest is all that is necessary to participate in the group," LaTulippe said. There are no requirements asked of members of the group and no credit is given. The Divorce Group meets every Tuesday at 2 and 7 p.m. in the basement of the library. Anyone is welcome to attend. LaTulippe stressed it is not necessary to join the group to attend, and regular attendance is not required. Those who feel uneasy about group situations . may meet privately with LaTulippe simply by making an appointment. All students having problems with school, or other related areas, are urged to seek advice from the Counseling Center.
