Show May 25, 1976 Signpost Page 3 Signpost criticism Institutional Council member Joseph Breeze, who was quoted in Sunday's Ogden Standard Examiner as saying that the Signpost has exhibited a deplorable lack of professionalism "in news and feature coverage said yesterday that his main complaint is with the journalism department. Breeze said that for the past "five or six years we have had an inept or unqualified person as department head" in journalism. He said that most of the journalism teachers at Weber have not had enough experience in print journalism . In reference to Ann Garrett, the present journalism instructor, he said, "The young lady who is now the journalism instructor appears to be highly qualified." He also said that the Signpost throughout this year has been better than it has been for five or six years. He did say however that the Signpost has tended to have a "loose format, sloppy writing and grammar, and poor spelling." He said that the answer to the problem is first "to employ a highly qualified instructor." In terms of specifics he said that the "gut of a newspaper remains that of as many short newsy stories as possible ." A proposal has been submitted to the Institutional Council to have the Media Board, which will act as publisher for the Signpost, change from being under the auspices of the Executive Council to the Institutional Council. In reference to this Breeze said that there is "a tricky situation all across the nation" between college newspapers and the institutions of the college." He said that there is "a need to maintain good taste in the campus paper without any pa ttern of censorship .
