The first two days the set up was in the union building. The next day it was moved to the Promontory towers. Monty Shupe, assistant director of the union building stated, "The dorms really pushed it over good." Last year approximately 220 pints were donated. Fraternities and sororities have a contest to see which will have the highest per-centage of their members donate. Although it is not known yet who won this year, last year's winners were Excels and Tau Theta Nu. The Blue Key National Honor Fraternity again sponsored this event for the Red Cross. WANDA 'W'AHLEN, set designer for theatre productions discusses her, background experience in this area. If New designer hired fefe'-. "In fact, I'd never even heard of Utah before. When I got a call from Dr. Rowley, I could only think of how remote and far-away Utah must be," com-mented the new set designer for the theatre department, Wanda Whalen. Wanda explained her job, "I design the sets and the costumes for all productions. Actually I'm really more interested in teaching design rather than design, ing." After attending Taylor Univer. sity in Northern Indiana where she studied English and speech, Wanda did graduate work and taught at the University of Wis-consin. She received her MFA degree in scene and costume design. The MFA. is a third year graduate degree. "In the arts, we consider it a terminal degree. You don't write a thesis, you design one," Miss Whalen ex-plained.Before coming to "Weber State college, Miss Whalen worked for a professional repertory company in St. Louis where she designed their dbstiimes. "IK if, 9': Strange school "Some things about this school seem strange, such as the theatre not being considered an academic entity. It's treatedlike an extracurricular activity. However, the facilities here are ex-tremely nice. Older schools are just not as well equipped for the modern theatre." Miss Whalen, whose friends think "I'm lost forever" admits she really does like it here. Most productions which are performed In March are designed in October. "I've never tried to design everything for nine productions in such short time before. Although she would like to teach stage design, she feels Weber is not presently equip-ped for such classes. "It takes a lot of money to train a student designer and we only have one student this year who is really interested in it," she continued. Miss Whalen was hired to re-place Michael Sharp, set design-er last year, who has gone to graduate school at Yale.
