Show Friday, May 28, 1965 SIGNPOST Page 12 Well, How Abouf Thaf The Hermitage, Russia's fabulous art museum, is said to have Mi et Acquainted Speefs! By Eugene Carlson ". . . tliat from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain . . ." Although the Memorial Day observance had not yet taken shape when Abraham Lincoln made his famous "Gettysburg Address," we find the above quotation to be a glowing spitome of the purpose of the holiday. Perhaps the purpose has become somewhat clouded- in our modern day. Originally, the holiday was an occasion for decorating the graves of the soldiers killed in the Civil War, but since World War II it has been the day to commemorate also those who died in later wars. From a psychological point of view, the setting of flowers on the marker of a grave might be considered somewhat neurotic. Besides, in our modern day, we too often experience the distasteful conse quences of releasing our emotion. In other words, it's not the vogue to "get sentimental." Not that this is bad. After all progress is not made by living mawkishly in the past. Those sold iers Of previous wars could under- stand why we've forgotten them time smoothes out the horror fes? y ii Lii tii i iS ; Is? aiii of what they went through. Maybe even the American soldiers who have died in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic can for give an apathy possibly caused by the distance, which also blurs the horror of war. But most sold iers would feel better about get ting blown in two or manned for life if they knew then- nation honored and appreciated them, even in death. It's obviously a struggle to take off time from watching the "Indy 500" on television, or cutting out the extra nine holes on the golf course just to decorate a grave or go to commemoration services. But it's really more than this it's a day we use as sort of a prayer for the world a hope that someday men will not have to die in the terror of war. As one great idealist, Henry W. Longfellow put it in his poem, "Let War's Tempests Cease". Lord, let war's tempests cease, Fold the whole world in peace Under Thy wings. Make all nations one, All hearts beneath the sun, Till Thou shalt reign alone. Great King of Kings. the world's greatest collection of modern a r t, but curiously, no Russians are exhibited. Rumor has it that the Chagalls and the other Russians are hidden in the cellar, being considered not realistic enough for Russian tastes.
