Orfo iff The brightest, sharpest, most cahrfuljiome movies you've ever seen I ed off with another 1st place in saddle bronc riding at the U.S.U. Intercollegiate Rodeo last weekend in Logan. Rex, who has done an out Varsity Wm&s9 33- by Rick Hassett Weber State's flashy football squad, led by quarterback Tim Jones and tailback Henry Owens, romped over the alumni, 33-0 ill a contest staged under the lights last Thursday at the Weber High stadium. Jones and Owens, who WSC fans are going to see a lot of next season, were the whole show against the alumni. "Slim Tim" threw a spectacular touchdown pass late in the first quarter to break a scoreless deadlock. As Jones was nailed by alumni end Brent Brown, he managed to heft the ball over Brown and into the arms of end Tony MacKinnon who was waiting in the end zone. Joe Blockovich split the uprights to make it 7-0 for the varsity. On the varsity's next offensive play, Jones rifled the pigskin 42 yards to Hank Owens, the cat with the fleet feet. Owens scampered into paydirt unscathed, and leaving a couple of alumni defensive men all by themselves. Score: Varsity 13, Alumni 0. The oldtimers came back strong with a march down the field to Weber's 35-yard line, but that was as far as they got. Little Clyde Latta, a transfer from Dixie JC, took over the varsity signal calling from Jones then and moved the Wildcats into scoring position. The entire stadium crowd was siuprised when Latta engineered a beautiful draw play with full back Ed Phillips toting the lea ther 15 yards into the striped section for another TD. After the conversion the tally stood at 20-0 for the varsity. Both sides got their licks in the third quarter. Except for some supurb running by Owens around the ends and some pinpoint passing by Jones, the varsity failed to score. So did the alumni, and the frame ended the same way it began 20-0. An alumni pass interception midway in the final quarter added insult to injury to the "gray haired guys" when Thorn Strebel snagged a Brent Hancock pass marker. Ron Haun, in a rare moment of glory, shot a short flare pass to Strebel for die score. The kick was missed and the varsity took a 26-0 lead. Owens scored his second TD of the game with only a minute left. And an exciting one it was. Owens was far downfield when Jones hit him with a long bomb, and he carried it to the alumni seven. Moments later the classy scatback went on a sweep around right end and the scoreboard lit up. The Wildcats added another point on the place-kick and it was 33-0. United Press International the next morning said that Owens was a possible great after the former Ogden High star had dashed off 69 yards in seven carries, hauled down three passes for 91 yards, and scored two . touchdowns. Other players receiving a mention for their outstanding play included Tim Jones, who likes to scramble with the ball, Jim Mann, Ed Phillips, and Duffy Deaver. Pick up either Volkswagen in Europe.
