Scientists at the University College of Medicine's division of hematology have shown the dog's disease to be the same as Hemphilia A., the most common form of the disease found in man. According to a report presented last week by Dr. Paul Didisheim, assistant professor of medicine, and Miss Dorothy L. Bunting, research assistant, at the 48th annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in Chicago, the dog's blood is missing Factor VIII. This factor, called antihemophilic globulin (AHG), is one of the 12 different plasma factors known to be important in the coagulation of blood, and is the same factor missing. in human hemophilia A victims. Hemophilia is characterized by the failure of the blood to coagulate, or clot, as rapidly as it should. Only women are carriers of the disease, and, although not affected by it themselves, can pass it on to their sons. Daughters of women who are carriers of hemophilia are also possible carriers of the disease. Hemophilia first came to the attention of medical scientists about 150 years ago. Queen Victoria of England was a carrier, and, through her children, passed the disease on to the royal households of Spain, Germany and Russia. Mose was discovered to have hemophilia when a medical student living in the home where Mose was bom was told of the dog easily bleeding at the slightest j scratch. Laboratory tests conduct ed in the Division of Hematology showed the dog to have a disease identical to human hemophilia. "We are .certain that the dog's mother is a carrier of hemophilia," said Dr. Didisheim. "Two years after Mose was born, another litter from the same mother but a different father produced a second hemophiliac which bled to death from a slight scratch." He went on to say that Mose has recently been sent to the University of Pittsburgh. There he will be bred in an effort to raise a colony of hemophiliac dogs for research purposes. The colony will be one of four such research colonies in the world, according to Dr. Didisheim. "The others are in North Carolina, Oklahoma and England," he said. "In Pittsburgh, studies will be Latest Craze; Self-Written Theme Songs Latest thing since writing your memoirs for Life and $150,000 is writing your very own theme song. For example: by Cassius Clay.
