Show Friday May 7, 1965 SIGNPOST Page 4 U.B. Movie Review by Joe S. Wright Walt Disney pictures seem to have a way of winning many types of awards because of the appeal Disney has to both adults and children. "Those Calloways," which was shown only several weeks ago in Ogden, was awarded the March BOX OFFICE Blue Ribbon Award as the most outstanding family film currently playing. Bill Sargent producer for Electronvision's "Harlow," "Hamlet," and "The T.A.M.I. Show," classified Electronvision as the "third medium." Electronvision is the process of recording from television tubes to motion picture film. "We are a third medium and must be treated that way," Sargent said. "It was hard for the industry to recognize television when it was new and it's hard for it to recognize Electronvision, but it must be done." lie mentioned that there is a greater demand for entertainment today than at any time in history. "There are more people with more money to spend and we are only making' one-third of the pictures today that were made 15 years ago." Sargent said he proved with "Hamlet" that a market exists. The show played on days that theatres normally do not make money. The show grossed over $3 million, and ranked 22nd in film grosses for the year, to make it the biggest two-day grosser in history. Many have asked me to publish the entertainers that will appear at Lagoon this summer. Jim Berry, public relations man for Lagoon said that many dates still must be filled for the summer season. The following is a list of those dates that have been filled. May 8, Hank Thompson; May 15, Dick Clark and his Caravan of Stars; May 22, Osmond Brothers (an Ogden group that have been on the Andy Williams show for several seasons); May 29, the Beach Boys (which may well be Lagoon's biggest night); June 4 and 5, the Kingsmen; June 11 and 12, Everly Brothers; June 18 and 19, Kingston Trio; June 25 and 26, Marty Robbins; July 2, Johnny Mathis; July 16 and 17, Buck Owens; July 23 and 24, the Four Seasons; August 20 and 21, Christy Minstrels; August 27 and 28, Johnny Cash. Also appearing but with no specific dates set are Trini Lopez, Nancy Wilson, and the Smothers Brothers. Theatre owners in many sections of the country are in pains. There are so many roadshow pictures being released this year and early next year, that new theatres are in need. . The theaters in the intermountain area aren't having the same problem because drive-in theatres show many first runs. Many new films are being produced in the Cinerama process, so the Cinerama theatre in Salt Lake may run into the trouble of holding back too many roadshow pictures. While in Denver last week with the journalism staff, I noticed that Denver's Cinerama theater is still showing ". . . Mad World." ' With the extreme popularity of Sean "007" Con-nery, it should be very interesting to see what the results are for the 1965 "BOX OFFICE Ail-American Screen Favorites Poll. The poll is conducted by sending ballots to motion picture editors of newspapers and magazines, theatre owners, press correspondents, radio and TV commentators, and the National Screen Council members.
