Show Page 12 THE SIGNPOST Febroory 2, 1968 by Howard Noel "Weber College has some growing up to do athletically as well as scholastically. One good year or one good game don't make a college a national power. Weber will have to play major ranked universities of rank for the next 25 years to be included with the other three universities of the state," stated John Pace, a Utah State alumnis from Layton. Pace entered his comments as a letter to the editor in the Ogden Standard Examiner on January 27. "USU will not be stampeded into scheduling Weber for some time. It takes many years of outstanding teams to gain the national prestige that USU has in major sports. "False statements concerning full time students at Weber who are trade tech students do not help the image at Weber. "USU has no intention of getting involved with the Big Sky Athletic Conference. This would be a step backwards," said Pace. For years now, a controversy has been aired between the alumni of Weber State and the major institutions In the state, and will probably continue for a few more years. Will these other schools ever place the Wildcats on their schedules? The Wildcats have the most impressive record in the state at this time, having compiled 11 wins against two defeats. On the road, the Cats are 4-1. The records of the other teams in the state aren't quite as bright. The University of Utah now stands 13 - 6. They have lost their last five games, all on the road. The Utah State Aggies have had a mediocre season to date, having won nine and lost eight. On the road, they are 3-5. The Cougars of BYU are 10-7 on the season, with a 4-6 showing on opponents courts. Very rarely do these teams lose on their home hardwoods. The real test comes on the road. Looking at the records of the big three, Lady Luck seems to be turning her charms in other directions.Utah was ranked in the top ten during the early season on an impressive record, but most of those wins came at home. New Mexico University is ranked fourth this week with a 16-0 record. But look at their record, 12 of those wins were in Albuquerque. They have 10 games left on their schedule of which six are on the road. May it be brought to the mind of Mr. Pace and others of the same thinking, that USU does play teams from the Big Sky. So before saying that the Aggies have no intention of getting involved with the Big Sky, take a look at the schedules. Perhaps the best thing for the USU Alumni to consider is that the Big Sky is becoming stronger in the competitive sports each year. Now would be the time to seek admission into the conference, especially since they seem to be rejected from the WAC. Could it be because there is not a large enough enrollment at the Logan campus, or because their facilities are inadequate to handle the size of crowd the WAC draws now? 9 U." k.
