Show February 2, 1968 Page 2 THE SIGNPOST 7 32nd annual i Debate tournament planned Over 1,000 high school debaters will invade the Weber State College campus next Friday and Saturday when the WSC Communications Department acts as host for the 32nd annual debate meet, now called the Leland H. Mosson Championship Debate Tournament. This meet, held each year on the Weber campus, is believed to be the largest one of its kind in the nation. Students from 95 high schools in Utah, Idaho and Nevada are expected to participate. Classes will be excused at 12 noon on Feb. 9 to accomodate the speech students. Conditions will still be crowded, however. "Space is still a problem," said John Hebestreet, WSC debate coach, "but many difficult ies incurred last year have been overcome." Four individual events will be open for competition: extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, impromptu speaking, and dramatic interpretation. The day's activities will begin at 8 a.m. with a general meeting in the Fine Arts Auditorium. After the meeting, the students will begin competition in their different events. All participants in the individual events will return Saturday to complete the judging. Those debate teams who have not been eliminated will also finish their competition on Saturday. Hebestreet has requested that any volunteer judges who want to help pick up ballots at the main desk of the Union Building at 12 Friday. "There have been many changes made in this year's tournament," he said. "It is the hope of the communication department that these changes will prove successful. We are looking forward to a very successful tournament." Program Scheduled One of the most exciting pianists of today, Gina Bachauer, honorary citizen of Utah, will perform at the Fine Arts Center Auditorium Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. Born in Athens, she is most exquisite in her adapt handling of the piano and the vigor of her techniques has suggested comparisons with Teresa Carreno while her repertoire ranges from Mozart to Stravinsky. Alumna celebrates 1 00th birthday Weber State College's oldest living Alumni member on record, Mrs. Rachel Middleton Jensen, celebrated Monday her 100th birthday.Mrs. Jensen, now under care at the Dee Memorial Hospital, was a student of the original Weber Stake Academy in 1895. She studied general course, dramatics and elocution. Her father, Charles Middleton, was a member of the Academy's original board of trustees. Academy events attended by Mrs. Jensen during her youth included the dedication ceremony of the first unit of the Moench classroom building. On Aug. 20, nineteen 1892 newspaper clippings saved by the Middleton family reads: "Monday was the occasion of the dedication of the Weber Stake Academy. The spacious lecture room of the building was elegantly decorated with flowers and bunting and from the front portico the National Emblem waved on the breeze." Faculty members of the a-cademy, including her father, often contributed personal donations to finance operations of the school, Mrs. Jensen recalled. The Moench building, still used for many Weber State classes, is a few blocks away from the site of the original Middleton home where the elderly lady was born on Jan. 29, 1868, and had lived most of her life. She had resided at another home (421 26th), which stood only a few feet from the original residence site, until the house was destroyed and she moved to the Dee Hospital.Among congratulatory messages received by the elderly lady was a birthday card from Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson. Mrs. Jensen has fairly good control of her faculties and is able to communicate with relatives .
