Show SIGNPOST LilLLLLJ This is the second in a series of features on the athletic programs of various clubs at Weber College. In this issue we are featuring Excelsior and Sharmea. Sharmea r After a comparatively inactive IM program last year, Sharmea has pushed participation to the hilt this year promising in the attempt to place high in the IM scoring. Under the leadership of Connie Chugg, IM manager for the "pink ladies", a well organized committee has been set up to coordinate the various activities'. Gerie Reed, Melba Sampson, Karen Warner, and Mary ilum assist the manager in scheduling weekly practices and in giving "bounding"' support to team play. The "pink ladies" placed second in the volleyball competition with between 20 and 25 girls dressed to play each game. The IM committee feel "hep" for a top-notch basket ball season this year with veteran Donna Cook and pledges Ruth Roe-link and Mary Lou Hum leading the way. Working as an advantage for the Sharmea Club is their sponsor, Carol Slater Westmoreland. Being active in athletics herself she is an asset in coaching and directing the "gangling greenhorns" into an organized playing group. Miss Chugg feels that intramur-als this year have been "just plain fun," and the spirit prevailing has been a general attitude of the best sportsmanship. She suggests that the spirit would be even better if the girls played their basketball games in the big gym where spectators might come to watch the fun. Excelsior Intramural athletics superiority is traditionally one of the goals set by the men of .Excelsior and thus far this year's members are upholding tradition as they lead intramural competition with 520 points. The"E" men's athletic "system" along with club cooperation and enthusiasm has given them two years of consecutive wins and if they're successful again this year they will gain permanent possession of the intramural revolving trophy. Instead of just having one powerful team for each sport, as some Coach C. L. Andersen Issues Track Suits; Releases Schedule Track Coach Dr. Clair L. Anderson issued the call last Wednesday for all prospective track men to pick up outfits and start workouts for the coming meets. Coach Anderson reports that there is a full schedule of meets beginning April 14 and ending May V.). The tracksters will travel to Nampa, Pocatello, Provo, and some will represent Weber at the national finals at Hutchinson, Kansas. Daily workouts commenced last Wednesday and will continue through the entire season. The prospective tracksters are requested to work out as often as possible until spring quarter when the athletes will be enrolled in a daily track class and will earn one crdcit. Workouts take place indoors for the present due to the cold weather. Loosening up exercises begin each afternoon at 3 ::.!() in the Central gym. HIM! Track Schedule April 14 Nampa Invitational. April 21 Idaho State Invitational.April 2H BYU Invitational. May 4 Weber Invitational. May 11 Conference at Weber. May 1! Nationals at Hutchinson, Kansas. of the other clubs have, Excelsior organizes at least three teams of near equal 'strength and enters them under club colors. The reason for this is, of course, that in this way there is a chance for taking points for more than one place. Excelsior, during this quarter has !4 participation in the intramural program. This large number of participation is accomplished by the entering of as many teams as there are players for. A new interclub ruling limits the number of teams each club may enter into intramural play to three. Excelsior, however, not only has the maximum of three squads in basketball but also has entered three independent teams. The club officers feel that in this way the interest of all members is kept at a high pitch. In this year's competition, Excelsior captured first and fourth places in football; in volleyball took second and third; and are in the thick of the battle for top spots in basketball. The "E" men feel that with the majority of place points in basketball and with just moderate success in the remaining sports they will wrap up the championship for the third consecutive year. Intramural managers, Glen Peterson and Bill Hart who are in charge of the "power program" for Excels are confident their boys will come through with the title. "It's the club spirit and cooperation that have kept us on top and if it continues we know the trophy will be ours," said Glen, obviously pleased. ( ) 4i v :,v. They are, left to right, Glen Campbell, Frank Berrett, Garth Hansen, Reese Quayle, and Don Clifford. Duane Loveland was absent when photo was taken. NO SURPRISE TO FANS Berrett Adds Spark to Squad The outstanding play of freshman, Frank Berrett in last week's games came as no surprise to local basketball fans. Berrett hails from Weber High School and last year was on everyone's all-Region One team andwdso on many all-state squads. He is the brother of former all-American Kenny Berrett. Frank poured through 20 points against CSU last Friday while playing less than three quarters. On Saturday night he started his first college game and hit for 21 points as well as turning in a fine job on defense. Cautious Coach Swenson, not being one to fall for a flash in the pan, hasn't announced as yet whether or not Berrett has officially been listed as a member of the big five. Weber's rejuvenated hoop squad, fresh from twin victories at the expense of CSU and Dixie College, journey north today for scraps with two of the conference leaders, Boise and Northwest Naza-rine.Tonight, the once "cool" 'Cats invade Boise to match baskets with the same team which beat them out of a National Junior College Tourney berth a year ago. Currently, the Broncos are neatly nestled in second place in the 1CAC standings and have yet to taste defeat in conference play. If Weber can knock the props from under the Boise machine, the 'Cats will have gained valuable ground in the hectic conference chase. Northwest Nazarine College, though considered weaker than Boise nevertheless is favored to take Weber when the teams clash Saturday night at Nampa. NNC i.-r in third place in the present standings, just back of Boise and just a step up from Weber. Home court advantage at the Idaho schools will definitely hamper the Wildcats in their bid to climb the conference ladder. If Weber can return home with victories over both teams, it will hoist the team into undisputed possession cf third place. Provided Boise downs NNC in their fray this week. Although Coach Swenson was reluctant to name his starters for the Boise game, he indicated that he might string with the boys who netted the dual wins last weekend. This would put big Duane Love-land at center, Reese Quayle and Garth Hansen or Dick Juluson at forwards, and Don Clifford and Frank Berrett or Glen Campbell on the guard line.
