Show Weber-Mickalum Wildcats Seek Third Win Of Grid Season Weber's high flying Wildcats will be seeking their third victory in three starts when they tangle with the highly touted McKinley high school alumni team from far-off Hawaii, tonight at 8 p. m. in the Ogden stadium. The Weberites, still steaming from last week's 39-6 massacre of the Mesa Mavericks, will be out to avenge the 6-0 pasting they suffered at the hands of the Micks last year at Honolulu. Second W. C. Appearance This is the second time -the Islanders have invaded Weber college, having performed here in 1929. The Wildcats appeared in Honolulu in 1932 and again in 1946. Coaches Bill Baker and Philip Minn of the Hawaiians have a fast, ofensive-minded team that is expected to give the Wildcats plenty of trouble. Coach Baker, along with Nelson Moku, Mickalum end, is a former Weber gridiron performer. Both men performed on the line for Weber in past years. Milton Mecham, Wildcat mentor, has been pushing his charges hard in preparation for the Mickalum game. Only Wayne Hanson, first-string end, sustained any serious injury in the Mesa game, but he is expected to be ready for action in Friday's tilt. Mickalums Tough Coach Mecham, ever the pessimist, stated that the Mickalums were "big, tough, and rugged and are reportedly four times better than the University of Hawaii", the team that gave Utah plenty of trouble last Saturday night. This being the case the some 10,00 fans who are expected to jam the stadium will witness a whale of a football game. Dokos Company Candy f Welcome home '. - 7. The Weberites were sparked by Jimmy Valentine, flashy little quarterback, who, early in the third quarter, brought the 7,000 fans who witnessed the spectacle to their feet n a blazing 90 yard touchdown run. The two teams battled evenly .luring the first period, which was .narked by line smashes and an exchange of kicks that brought Mesa to the Weber 25 early in the second quarter where the Wildcats recovered a fumble to take the offensive. Weber's first tally came as the result of a drive featuring the plunging of co-captain Lloyd Thompson, as Valentine flipped a 15 yard aerial to freshman end Lawrence Stone. Halfback Dick William's attempt at the conversion was no good. Wildcats Score Again Continuing their second period scoring splurge the Wildcats tallied again after Mesa booted from deep in their territory up to the midfieid stripe. Williams took the punt and made a brilliant return down to the Maverick 20 yard marker where, two plays later, halfback Odell Schmalz powered his way over to pay dirt. William's try for the placement was again no good. Owen Koch set the stage for the third Weber tally on a beautiful gallop down to the Mesa 30 yard stripe. On the next play Ralph Es-keleson, who made some magnificent gains throughout the contest, ripped through the Maverick line for 30 yards and another Wildcat score. Valentine Thrills Crowd It was on the kickoff opening the last half that Jimmy Valentine thrilled the crowd with his lengthy gallop. He received the kick and took off like a frightenedjack-rabbit through the entire Mesa team and crossed the goal line 92 yards later. The attempt at the extra-point failed. Mesa's offensive drive came in the third with Klumb and Kendall moving the ball to the Weber two yard line where Pflieger plunged the touchdown. The conversion failed. Koch Scores Owen Koch broke away on another long sprint to chalk up the Wildcat's fifth counter and Williams again converted. Dale Shaw, reserve' Weber back, scored the final Wildcat touchdown on an around end sweep and Williams again kicked the point to make the final score Weber 39, Mesa 6. Coach Milt Mecham used the entire Weber squad in the one-sided tilt. IMi COCA-COLA COMPANY ir Scheduled ToiiifflitlF r i C . He is end coach, assisting Milt Mecham.Coach Gardner has always been outstanding in athletics. At the Brigham Young university, where he graduated with a B.S. degree, he attained recognition in athletics and scholarship. While at the B. Y. he played regular on the basketball and football team. When he graduated he was honored by the Y by being awarded the J. M. Stein cup for being the outstanding graduating athlete. This was of particular significance because he was also grouped with those few which graduated with "high honors" for scholastic achievement. Besides coaching the football team, Mr. Gardner is also an English instructor. This quarter he is teaching several classes in freshman English. Mr. Gardner stated that he is "proud to be a member of the faculty of the college." He thinks that the football squad is. made up of a wonderful group of men. Sophs, Freshmen Battle at Game Adding color to the Weber-Mesa football game last Friday was a half-time sophomore-freshmen battle and a post-game weiner roast. At the half the Whip club performed a drill created by Evelyn Yumaguchi, forming first an M for Mesa and then a W for Weber. At the conclusion of the drill came a sandbag duel between sophomores and freshmen. Five sandbags, each weighing 100 pounds, were placed on the 50-yard line, freshmen and sophomore men lined up before each goal, and at a signal attempted to carry as many as possible of the bags over their opponents' goal line. Although approximately 400 students poured on the field for the contest, the final score was 0-0. Cal Lucy announced the battle over the stadium's loud-speaker system. Festivities after the game featured a weiner roast above the city reservoir in east Ogden. EMEMSMEWEMEKEKEHEHSKIEMEH 3 E M M 1 Pafsy's Popcorn Shop 2574 Wash. It certainly makes me feel great to be back in Utah again after a tour of the east this past summer. Those Maryland hills looked all right, but I really appreciate these peaks of Utah better than anything in ray ravels. Things certainly have been booming here at Weber and my congratulations to a great football team, a great coaching staff and a swell group of guys and gals who make jp Weber's student body. Catching my eye the first day of jchool was the "Victory Bell", with splints and bandages of last year tossed to the four winds, looks like a new king upon his coronation, smiling and proud. An undetermined number of good looking girls flooding the halls and classrooms. A new crop of freshmen, strong in number, plus plenty of spirit which was shown wholeheartedly at last week's Mesa-Weber football game during the half-time "Sandbag Duel". The Freshmen threatened to score several times while the Sophs were held spellbound on the 50-yard marker until the final whistle. Great going, Frosh! I lost two bucks but it was worth it. feoeoeeoeoeo QUICK LUNCH Hamburgers - Short Orders Good Coffee 432 - 25th Street Ogden, Utah OUR STORE , v- snorts 'ivrn '4'.' ,MYiot ' oil (f.reiace ai . .,,-PTO COCA-COLA BOTTLING CO.
