Shirley Lynch Let's Not Be Copycats! It is a well-established fact that if you are going to defeat a man in a field in which he excells, you must first understand that field as perfectly as he does "fight fire with fire", as the old adage goes. The United Nations were not able to defeat Germany by watching passively while the Nazis overran Europe with their new techniques of warfare they beat Germany by adopting these techniques and developing them to an even higher degree than had their enemy. Germany was beaten by her own weapons turned back upon her. Now there are those who tell us that we must by some means, peaceful or otherwise (with the stress on the "otherwise"), defeat Russian ideology within our nation. They are undoubtedly right in the assumption that we don't want to become a vest-pocket edition of the Soviet Union, but do they realize that the means with which they propose to prevent this are identical with the methods used by those whom they are trying to defeat? Can they possibly claim that the purges and ejections from office that they advocate is anything more than a reversion to those same undemocratic and unjust policies that they claim to be the particular characteristics of communism? Their defense is that the communist subversive elements have perfected the very methods that can profitably be used to root them out that they are merely turning the communist's own weapons against them. And no one will disagree that NKVD is a very efficient organization but do we want one in the United States? We could afford to adopt Germany's military techniques in our armed forces, for they were only technological innovations that did not affect our society or way of life to any great extent. But we cannot afford to adopt political methods that are the exact opposite of those used in our political system. Use of violence in stifling communism in the U. S. can only lead to the negation of civil rights that is the trade-mark of the Soviet Union. Where is the victory for democracy in such asituation? m m mmna i w m m m m m c-mi mi Watson-Tanner Clothing Co. Whatever the final score may be, we all respect the sportsmanship of our visiting opponents and wish them the best of luck. The SIGNPOST would like to add its welcome to those already extended to the visiting team and those accompanying it. We of Weber have been proud to have had them as our guests, and only hope that our efforts to make them feel at home on the campus have been as successful as were those which they extended to our team in the Islands last year. It's really been a pleasure to have had these fellows, with their infectious good humor and song, on the campus for the past few days. We all hope that our association with the Mickalums will continue to be as pleasant as it is now for a long time to come. By MUDDLE f Something new (in contrast to our jokes) has been added. G-Items Veterans who make frequent changes of job or school training establishments before completing the course selected, will have to comply with more strict requirements for the issuance of supplemental certificates of eligibility and entitlement by the Veterans Administration in the future. Effective immediately, a veteran, who of his own volition interrupts his training at a time other than at the end of a term or semester, will not be issued a supplemental certificate of eligibility and entitlement until he establishes satisfactory evidence: (a) That his interruption resulted from good cause, i.e., illness, economic conditions, or other established circumstances beyond his control. (b) That the institution in which he was in training is willing to re-accept him as a student or .trainee. Supply Supply Headquarters It seems after the appearance of last issue that even editors can't be trusted! It's not unusual for a writer to find half of his copy has been cut when a story appears in print, but when it's all there and more besides that" s something! We didn't even know about Pliny, the Elder and his so-called "cures" until last week's' paper came out. Daffynitions Golf ball a small object which remains on the tee while a perspiring citizen fans it vigorously with a long club. Gossips the spies of life. Football legal mayhem. Skunk a pungent pussy. Space the only thing some students take up in collegs. Congrats Whip Club on your snappy first drill. Love that purple and white! Sophomores and freshmen, during last Friday's sand bag rush demonstrated the truth of the old adage, "never hit a man when he's down jump on him." Football Pun(t)s Sports writers also agree that one football player they know must be a contortionist because he ds always going around his own end. Time to go, but remember faint heart never won fur, lady. See you! Crosbie, Thompson Lead Wildcat Team This Year The Weber college football team boasts two co-captains to lead the team on the gridiron. Merrill Crosbie and Lloyd Thompson were chosen by Coach Milt Mecham and members of the squad just prior to the first league encounter. Both of these boys are gridiron goliaths, Crosbie a 210-pound tackle and Thompson a 185-pound halfback. Thompson was shifted from the fullback post, which he held down last year, to the halfback spot at the beginning of this years season. Crosby gained his experience at Ogden high school where he was a main string tackle. Thompson is also a graduate of the local prep squad where he was the fullback on the team of 1944. I will try to be as comprehensive as possible and I hope to keep you posted on the latest recordata. The perennial maestro, Benny Goodman, has come through again. This time ti's a Capitol album entitled "Benny Rides Again". This album of four records presents the revitalized Goodman band in a unique manner. Benny and his piano men form a duet to kick the album right into that mello groove. Then a bass is added to round out the trio for side two. The quartette then takes over side three and then that's right, you guessed it, the fourth side is the Quintet, Benny's favorite combo the sextette then set out to prove why. Sides seven and eight are reserved for the whole band and I"m telling you "cats" this album is really in there. Benny really rides out on the "Lazy River" in his duet arrangement of this jazz classic. His flawless technique and wonderful style form a combination that never misses. In the quintet treatment of "Music Maestro Please", you'll hear some great accordian by Ernie Felice. It's seldom one hears a squeeze box in a jazz combo but this should be heard much more often. Perhaps the greatest of this group of five records is the septette presentation of "How High the Moon". Here's a tune that's been battered around the walls of practically every dance hall in the States and probably even in some foreign ball rooms. A melody that has been ruthlessly bopped and re-bopped by willing but sometimes unable musicians. That's right, it's truly wonderful just to hear the melodyperiod. Benny's septette undoubtedly treats it in as fine a manner as you have heard or will hear for quite some time. The wonderfully relaxed beat "showcases" the fine solos throughout. Dig, that trombone man, he's fine. Also some great piano, interesting guitar and above all, Goodman's impeccable touch. The Goodman, orchestra reallv kinks off "Ob i pa en" in a nitr wav 0 ... " -j Catch that terrific trombone chorus and a moving trumpet solo. "No, Baby, No" occupies side eight. The dynamics are very interesting and you're treated to a rare Goodman vocal. You don't hear a Sinatra but a voice with a beat and an infectious manner. So you'd better pick up on this album it's great. 416 -24th Street 1 |
