An official of the state department, just returned from lirai-.il. has furnish ed some interesting details in regard to the recent attempt of a clique ol Brazilian army officers to incite a rcvo-ution rcvo-ution and establish a monarchy there. The plan of action, the official says, was to create a military riot iu front of the president's palace, during which Campos Salles was to be assassinated, an officer of the revolutionary band declared de-clared ruler and Brazil proclaimed a monarchy. It seems, however, that owing to information in-formation furnished by an army officer, fully coguizant of the brewing conspiracy, con-spiracy, the president was at all times aware of the plans and the progress of the revolutionists. Two prominent generals in the army were involved iu the plot, but except for their small following fol-lowing the army stood firm for the president, and the project came to naught but punishment for the offenders. |
