Show -m a-c- XOT PLEASED. Ed., Washixgton County News. Sir: Last 'evening a pleasure was afforded the citizens" of St. George of listening to an eye and ear witness of some incidents relative to encounters with A guinaldo and his forces in the far-off Fhillipines. Also a very plain, comprehensive disquisition on the principles and polices of the two great political parties! Next the subject of the Hon. B. H. Roberts' nomination and election were descanted upon. The speaker, Mr. Whittemore, seemed to bewail Pvoberts1 election as an indiscreet act, it naving revived, ip serious measure the spirit of persecution so bitterly exhibited in : the past towards the majority of the people of Utah. The writer could ' scarcely forbear rising- to ask. If Roberts nomination was not in order If the registration of votes was not regular The day of election proper The appointed machinery mach-inery present If the voting- was by secret ballot If challengers existed The ballots were legally counted Returns Re-turns thereof made and results declared de-clared by competent officers. If these are affirmatively answered, whose business busi-ness is it as to what person, being a qualified citizen, is elected to office by the majority of the sovereign people of this State? TVho shall dictate our political preferences pref-erences or denounce the truthful results re-sults thereof or establish his opinion that the people have perpetrated an unwise act? We are not dependent for our rights now, constitutional or otherwise, upon the stultified word or-act or-act of scheming, plotting politicians. We are not cringing mendicants nor sycophants. By the liberal or illiberal powers we cannot be snecked in to vote an unknown ticket nor intimidated to vote, except our choice, thro' fear of consequences brought on by religious bigots ("it were base to call them men'') be there few or many. Nay! We scorn such intimidation and once more shall the walls of the Temple of Liberty echo with the exalted ex-alted patriots sentiment "Sink or . swim, survive or perish," in Utah the Elective Franchise shall be free, Jos.
