Show THE the above has been proposed as I 1 the new name for the kaibab or Bucl buckskin skin mountain which forms the north rim of the grand canyon this change in name is claimed to be de in order to elevate this great scenic forest above all other forests in both name and management as it is in attributes no one however having a full regard for historic and traditional nomen comenda cla ture and especially tor for apel lations so fitting and appropriate as kaibab and buckskin can wish to see these names dropped or superseded to the indians of old who found in it a veritable happy hunting ground this long forested ridge like mountain was simply kaibab mean in the mountain lying down then came the hunters and trappers tol fol loed by the settlers who found the tract swarming with deer hence it was named by the white men the buckskin plateau or mountain these names have clung persistently and without change for sixty years of known history and they could not well be changed now the suggested plan includes also the changing ot of certain of the bound aries arles where they do not conform to the natural configuration and bly change even in the jurisdiction the national park service now ha jurisdiction over the grand canyon national part park which takes off a wide strip from the southern end of the kaibab along the canyon and the forest service has jurisdiction ov er the remainder of the mountain though no boundary or una line of sep appears except by designs tion just which of the government branches would have charge ot of the proposed presidents forest Is not stated in information at hand though the evident intention is to add it to the grand canyon national park area the bill introduced in it the united states senate recently by senator reed smoot provides among other things tor for the withdrawal of the lands from grazing and timber ing hence it Is assumed that the in is to transfer the tract from the forest service to the national park service As senator smoot smoots s bill was introduced it Is probably not entirely sat Is factory even to the original apropo cents of the measure tor for it besig nates only the portion of the kaibab cast ot of the central system of drift fences or roughly the eastern halt ot of the mountain as the president 0 forest this would cut the forest fores t at its most beautiful part namely along the line of the depressed parks and glades in the broad crest of the kaibab leaving cattle grazing immediately med lately to the nest est in a forested area equally interesting and tul fill as that to the east undoubtedly those fostering the movement to segregate the forest as a unique scenic could not by any means be satisfied by having the mountain so subdivided or cut in two moreover since timbering and grazing would be prohibited in the presidents forest the movement as proposed can never be entirely air fair to the hundreds of southern utah and northern arizona people who are de do pendent to 0 a greater or less extent on the resources ot of kaibab as they have been for many years these people are not using the capital resources but only the legitimate annual yield of grass and forage and the flown down and other timber which for the beautification of the forest should be kept removed as fast as it accumulates the min detary interests of these people do not stand in the way of their own advantage in the tourist business nor in the way of others who might night r reap a profit from the tourist business in deed few communities are more keenly interested in the development of their than those of southern I 1 utah mall but to run tun a legal fence bence around th the e kaibab which would be open only to tourists and hunters Is apt to become a pretty unpopular enterprise and does not deserve success the beauty and attractiveness of the forest has been maintained all these vears along with grazing privileges and the neighboring people have thus been able to earn a livelihood the president presidents s forest may be created in all fairness to the users ot of the region only when the resident and the noll resident user may benefit alike to the direct disadvantage of neither salt lake tribune |
