Show gilg utah state farm bureau salt lake city utah february 25 26 farm bureau news points out that the absence of retrenchment in educational educato nal expenditures during 1921 did not conform to the general policy adopted in practically all other public departments of the state the tax committee of the utah state farm bureau has issued a letter to the local farm bureau organizations in w which reference is made to possible disaster and complete breaking down of the public school system by this Is meant according to members of the committee that when the turn Is finally taken the pendulum will suing too far in the opposite direction unless retrenchment can be brought about sanely and slowly concerning somewhat the imbres that have been created through out the state by the committee committees 5 re cent letter addressed to the state board of education the report to the local farm organizations in this and other localities in part foll follows owai t judging from opinions expressed upon this communication we believe that the people generally including most of the teaching profession and practically all school ofil officers cers agree with the position taken by the bu reau and with its proposed program there are some however who evi ovi dently tearing fearing a personal loss in salary or an increase in work are endeavoring deavo ring to maintain and justify the present expensive and wasteful methods by the sentimental cry which they have always employed that any effort at retrenchment is going to undermine our school tern tem this Is the selfsame bogie bogle that has led us into such extremes in the past and it has hindered more than advanced the interests of our splendid school system taxing officials will have this influence to r meet neet and we trust that they will not be moved from an attitude of moderation and conservation by it we repeat that we want to see teachers adequately paid but we insist that a readjust ment based upon a scientific salary r schedule che dule will along with numerous other econom economies les suggested by us ef feet large savings retrenchment is hec necessary essary and is actually taking place in all other lines and while the policy of the bureau is to exert every effort to up hold and sustain everything that is praiseworthy in our school system it insists that economy shall be observe ed in the operation of our out schools and it Is definitely opposed to a con ti nuance of the reckless extravagance of the past and to tax levies that will permit of it there was an art expectation of re trench ment in 1921 and yet reve for district schools and high schools increased from 8 in 1920 to 9 in 1921 an in crease of and this in face of the tact fact that the assessed calud tion of taxable property in the state decreased 99 taxes for other purposes pui Pul poses show a it decrease all along the line in 1921 to cities and towns shows a decrease of to county general fund 55 1341 to road fund to state general fund howare we to account for this general arid and substantial retrenchment in all these other directions with an lu in crease for district schools and high schools which almost overcomes the entire saving effected by all of these decreases approach the matter from adoth er angle and see where the advocates of continued extravagance would lead us the total expenditure for schools antho in the forty districts of the state including cities for the year 1919 1019 was 6 foo 37 97 for the year 1920 it was 8 or an increase of more than two and a quarter million dollars |
