not connected by a road that la practicable and passable and whereas the two parks are receiving more public advertising from both federal and state sources through their several touring bureaus than any other national play grounds and whereas the touring public la seeking and demanding a connecting link between tha said parks that these two scenic wonders may be vis cited with some degree of satisfaction and comfort 2 therefore be it resolved that the road convention here assembled pledge themselves individually and ta tbt ot a highway from zion national park to the grand canyon and eliat 1 our efforts falter not we have fully realized the fruit of this under taking and be it further resolved 3 that a committee of five be appointed by chii convention to go y over the route to locate petty and joseph S snow committee II 11 J doolittle read the report of committee on finance as follows to the hon chairman and members ot the road convention we your committee on finance beg leave to report 1 that with the success that has attended the experiments made by y dry farming in the southern part ot utah along the present wagon road extending from hurricane utah to onla arizona we are firmly convinced that there are in the neighbor hood of three quarters of a million acres of land suitable tor dry farms with almost an assured annual crop providing there were some facilities extended to that section particularly in the establishment of good mat service 2 there are approximately thir ty five miles of road fifteen of which lies in utah and twenty in arizona that would have to be wholly con and it this could be done with the balance ot the road in fair condition and the present mall service from hurricane to cane beds extended to fredonia and kanab the people along this route would have a service that would be first class the i entire year and a great inducement affected tor settlers along seventy miles of sparsely settled country which could be turned into a perfect granary and furnish homes tor ands of people v 3 we firmly believe that the roads in the west are as necessary as the roads in the east to assure the farmers transportation facilities to the markets and that it Is the duty of the government to assist in the making of the roads as a part of the necessary pioneer work and tor the above reasons we feel that it Is up to the people in this section of the country who are acquainted with the conditions to take the initiative in securing the assistance ot the executives of arizona and utah in appeal ing to the federal government tor the establishment of a federal post road between hurricane and fre donta and providing the necessary means for its construction 4 for the above and other reasons we feel that a permanent finance committee be appointed who will work in connection with and under the direction of the arrowhead trails t and development association and in order to the business of the meeting we respectfully becom mend the following harden bennion Benn lon secretary of state mr bennion expressed the regrets of governor bamberger damberger that he could not be at this convention having important bust business nets in wyoming mr bennion complimented the convention for the business like way in which it had earned carried through its work ork he ile had confidence in the men selected to look out the road the pioneers of utah had shown rare judgment in the selection ot of roads engineers had followed them changed the roads and had eventually come back to the roads laid out by pioneers this convention had undertaken der taken a big thing and he complimented it nothing conduced so much to the comfort and convenience of the people as good roads the people have arrived at a stage where poor roads will not do for them they must have good roads but as I 1 have already said this is a big thing road building is expensive I 1 havo have no doubt the government will help in the proposed road the members of the state road commission have been united la in working for southern utah despite reports to the contrary was pleased to be here and meet with the people the state officials als were deeply interested in this move but are alive to the bigness of it mr bennion was roundly applauded at the conclusion of his remarks chairman said we are abare an are that we are talking of big things but hurricane Is a living witness ot of what people can do it they are determined to do big things we can and will have tho the road united effort on the part of the people will do dolt it senator was heartily o 0 applauded omission it la Is deeply regretted that through flome some misunderstanding the commercial clubs of beaver and billiard counties and prominent citizens of these two counties were not officially invited to attend the convention this Is felt all the more here because of the splendid services of these two counties for the arrowhead trail |
