in such a manner as to center the attention of the people on what he said in his preliminary remarks mr wallis congratulated the people of st george on the improved condition of the streets and said they were cleaner than those of any city inspected by him with possibly tho exception io of losepha the hawaiian settlement near grantville Grant wille he also complimented the city council on the enlarging of the settling pond at the head of alie water system and for the purchase of a block of land for a city park and a half block for a childrens playground he commented upon the number of fine homes which had been built bince he was here a year ago and the many more which are to be built in the immediate future he emoke of his visit to the st george cheese factory and praised it very highly for its cleana condition he then emoke upon the advantage of at george as a natural sanitarium and said that any number of people would come and winter here as eoon as they could be accomma cited to do this said mr wallis you must hae homes with sanitary conveniences and while there may not be many here financially able to build such 1 for rent yet outside capital would be glad to make such an investment in connection with the leading men of the community if an organized effort was made to that end there are well to do people in salt like city ogden and other places who have to seek a lower and milde altitude in winter on account of heart trouble who would be glad to pome to bt george i were the proper accommodations mr wall is pleaded with those present who had not done so to inseal plumbing in their homes and said that if each home had these two modern conveniences binks and toilets the fly nuisance nui since would be greatly minimized for there would be no kitchen slops out at the back door and no filthy outhouses out houses for the flies to feed on he wanted it understood how ever that st george had done a wonderful work in this regard notwithstanding the tightened of the people generally for out of the stirly homes in the city 93 had either a sink toilet bath tub or lavoratore lav oratory 40 homes had a complete outfit which consisted of all these sanitary conven 1 21 other homes had and lavoratore lav oratory but no toilet while 7 other residences were complete with the exception bt a bath lub all the new homes fotr under construction st or contemplation were to be equipped with complete outfits and he felt sure there were many homes which would boast of some of these conveniences before another ear rolled round referring to the water system alie speaker said it was a credit to the people of st george to hao accomplished complis hed what it lias in this regard there were other cities in alie state larger and wealthier than thia which have not the grit and courage to undertake such a A fine water supply is the most valuable asset a comar unity can and many a life is dived because of it Pu and pure air is necessary ebsary to our very exist ance and st george lias both it is now alie duty of the city council to extend lie benefits to other portions of the city which at present W of a cafe water whose property nevertheless has been faed to inseal alie present system air wallis then outlined a campaign of clean tonn work for st george which lie considered would bring the city to the very top if it was faithfully and vigorously followed up first lie advocated rood live committee to take charge of the work not selected from any one organization but one member from each such the commercial club city council 1 academy and public schools let this committee organize with a progressive public hinted man at its head and then district the town selecting a good live man over each district when this is done let the committee make a tour of the city noting doan the points of attack to be made during alie campaign amohn aliese he mentioned the cultivation or cleaning up of vacant lota bridging and filming of ditches ps repairing of fences trimming of shade trees erection of fly proof out houes removal of corrals from sidewalks repairing of streets setting out more trees growing more lawns and flowers pulling down abandoned buildings more general use cf paint and screens mr wallis referred to alie good work doce in some cities by designating one day in each month when the citizens generally donate their services toward improve ing conditions in their community one month it might be hauling gravel on the streets another month it might be working on the public square or another month in cultivating vacant property and so on through the vear ending with a dance or entertainment at night such a program as this would be for the committee to work out as the conditions of each community an not the same the speaker said it all rested with tho people themselves as to the kind of u city they had if they went at it with enthusiasm under the leadership of a committee in whom the people had confidence and who were the first to lead out then he looked to pee st george wrest the honors from all other cities in the state and become the cleanest town in utah such a reality was more than possible with the good start already made and it required no practical expenditure pend iture of money all it needed was organized effort and a to win the greatest attention was given mr wallis and our only regret is that ve have not the space at our command to publish his remarks in full |
