Show THE IMMENSE TONNAGE SURE some of the products mentioned that a railroad through dixie country would handle the salt lake route would not only open up a vast agricultural mineral and timber country which haa been waiting 50 for transportation facilities and furnish a constantly increasing tonnage for the road but would receive its entire right of vav through the country free of charge besides a substantial bonus to assist in the construction of the line said C R pugh one of the board of county commissioner of kanab county this morning mr pugh is one of the delegation from kane county here to attend the good roads convention which convenes in this city jan 26 and is accompanied by john F brown a prominent lawyer and stockman A D findley probably the largest grower of stock in southern utah J M thompson also a prominent stockman and john 0 smith representative in the legislature from kano county all of whom aro delegates to the good roads convention the building of the road through cedar city and st george continued mr push would open up i the coal mines in the harmony district which are vast in extent and would begin shipping coal almost from the start it would also tap the north fork coal district where there are unlimited quantities of the best quality of cannel coal in the mountains in the corner of kane washington and iron counties kano county is you might say ono vast coal field and numerous productive mines would Q opened with the advent of the railroad the rich copper mines in the buckskin mountains would alao be de eloped the ore in thee mountains goes from 10 to 90 per cent copper and a smelter costing is already on the ground ready to operate as soon as transportation por tation facilities are afforded the smelter was built four years ago but has not been kept in acene operation because of the expense attached to hauling the ore and its products so far to a railroad in kane county is one company now working on a 11 1 1 foot ledge of coal this is the bald knoll company and its properties lay near the old extinct crater mine which has been idle for many years but arc chobo alio assert that the old property would become a productive shipper if alie railroad were anywhere handy then there are the cattle and sheep industries which would increase in value 50 per cent with railroad into the country from to head of fine fit cattle arc shipped out of the country every year as it is but with a rail roid near tho number would be doubled and trebled in a short time fully head of sheep arc shorn the three counties named every year the flock masters are now compelled to drive or haul either to modana or marysvale Marys vale and the expense is so great that the industry is not developed anything like what would be the case were alie railroad more accessible both the cattle and sheep industries ire in their infancy and would receive a mighty impetus and be a source of ever increasing tonnage for the new road of no small moment is the timber industry which would be opened up in the buckskins mountains today there are four billion feet of the finest kind of timber in most all varieties ranging from white pine to mahogany and this vast timber belt would soon respond to the woods mans axe it there was a way of shipping the lumber product out the timber is located in the kaibab national forest and already many applications are under consideration for the permission to cut this timber in the matter of agricultural and horticultural products the southern country is not excelled in the country the railroad would naturally increase the number of acres placed under cultivation each year and this source of shipping tonnage would go on growing larger as long as timo lasts the fruits produced in the dixie country are unsurpassed chest george grower could out his strawberries rasp berries grapes pomegranates and other fruits on alie breakfast table of the salt lake consumer in a much better condition than those now brought in from california the sunshine of the south produces the finest flavored fruits in the w orld and salt lake would be right at our door for everything the country produced in this connection a firm of chicago capitalists is now working on a project for opening up several hundred thousand acres of fine land in washington county located along ulong zions creek embracing acres this land includes much fine fruit and grim land and when under cultivation will add ly to the shipping resources of the country there 14 a population of probably boft tributary to alie country through which the salt lake route would pass and the number would increase by bounds as soon as it becomes possible to gel in and out by rail the most feasible route it beems to me would bo to branch off at lund on the present main line passing through cedar city striking alie coal mines at harmony and on to belleview in alie noted black ridge district thence the road would go through which is the sheep center of the district and on through hurricane to washington city and st george alio entire district is full of fertility and possibilities in agriculture and mining and I 1 can badely say with alie advent of a railroad would become one of the leading sections of the state the state itself in my opinion could afford to pay alio railroad to build through the st george country on account of the enhancement of the value of its lands winch would surely follow and as for alie people of that section last spring when the matter of building a branch line to alio district was broached the residents agreed to give the right of way for the branch for nothing and the cedar people agreed to raise in basli and the people of alio lotice country another as a banut to induce alic building of the brinch and ith tho niacin line view vi ell tho st georgo people do not do aej thing by hah es and the railroad people bould find themselves in tho midat of frenda alicy como our aay deseret nes b
