The outstanding ' 2calT-model work of a Kennecott Copper employee em-ployee will again be the feature attraction of Utah Copper Division's Divis-ion's display at the Utah State Fair this year. Basil Doman's exact models of the locomotives, ore cars, electric shovel, equipment and trackage used in the famed open-pit copper cop-per mine have amazed thousands who have visited Kennecott Copper's Cop-per's booth in previous years. These miniature models; actually actu-ally .perform like the actual equipment itself. The electric shovel scoops ore, swivels and loads it into the waiting ore cars. When the miniature ore train is loaded, it pulls away, and leaves the miniature mine- via replicas of the mine's tunnels and switchbacks. switch-backs. . Mr. Dcman of Midv'ale, a locomotive loco-motive engineer at the mine, has spent over 2,500 hours of spare time on his models. They are made of sheet brass and various bar shapes. Only the electric motors, mo-tors, gears, wheels and couplers are made commercially. Mr. Doman's Do-man's tools consist of files, drills, saw and soldering iron. I The present display is currently current-ly being remodeled and improved. improv-ed. This year dt will include switchbacks and extra tunnels which will allow trains to travel from one mine level to another as they do in the actual mine. As a result, it is expected the display dis-play will give a more accurate and realistic picture of the open-pit open-pit mine operation. Utah Copper Division's booth is located in the mining building I No.. 7 (south entrance). The Fair I opens Friday, September 16, and j ends Sunday, September 25. |
