Show Albert L Hubert Finds Interesting Indian Relics Near St. George By MABEL JARVIS In his way of figuring, Albert L. Hubert, who is at present making his home in St. George, the year has two important seasons, the one when he can go digging Indian In-dian mounds, and the other when he is working for the wherewithal to make his next hunting expedition. expedi-tion. Judging by the many pictures pic-tures and relics he has in his possession, Mr. Hubert has been fairly successful at least part of the time, on his hunting seasons, and according to his statements his best find thus far was made on the promontory above the old Jarvis field damsite, just southeast south-east of St. George. Father Also A Hobbiest From his stories it appears that Mr. Hubert's father was also a hobbiest and he seems to have begun his expeditions to Indian burial places as a young man. His recent articles in the Salt Lake Tribune indicate that he has learned the art of mound digging rather thoroughly, and like all who follow this hobby, it has become be-come an obsession with him. Apparently Ap-parently he has followed this work in several states, and knows much of the lore of the early pottery makers and basket makers mak-ers as they are divided by scientists sci-entists for study purposes. However, How-ever, he declares, that some of the very best country he has seen for interesting digging is in this southern Utah, eastern Nevada and northern Arizona. Part of his interest for an extended ex-tended period has been to interest research institutions in financing a real expedition into this area, and he thinks he may now be in line for such an expedition, having hav-ing had correspondence with the Smithsonian Institute and other large centers on the subject. He figures it will be into January before he will he able to get another an-other digging trip lined up, and even then, may be hindered by military operations, but he believes be-lieves the mound he began excavating exca-vating on the promontory above the Rio Virgin, where he found a most priceless necklace and other evidences, win yield many more treasures. At least he has hopes of getting permission from the property owners to continue his search when the time comes he can go, especially if the scientists who have written him .are able to make the trip. |
