Show OPA Official Declares Price Control and Rationing Helps Public War price control and rationing have saved the public many billions bil-lions of dollars, E. Eric Snow, chairman of the St. George war price and rationing board said today. The index of the cost of living in ' Utah now stands 25 points higher than it did for the average of 1935-39. At the same point in the first World War, living costs had increased 50 per cent. After the first World War, inflation swept the nation and liv ing costs increased 126 per cent over the prevailing index in 1914. "A good many of the staple articles of living and warfare," said the board chairman, "have remained almost stable in price. By the price control, statisticians estimate that United States citizens citi-zens have seen 22 billion dollars saved and the government or the taxpayers, 67 billion dollars, a total of 89 billion dollars. The cost of price control, rationing and rent control are about $1.25 per person annually". One of the reasons why the cost of price control and rationing ration-ing has been so low, said the board chairman, is the fact that 200,000 volunteer workers have donated their time and labor to assisting OPA in administrative work. |
